GRammar expert needed

IS "kneeled" the proper word for the past tense of "kneel"? I always thought it was "knelt" and that is what I have always used.

I've always used knelt. But it seems grammar is getting lazy and adding the -ed is easier for many words.

Not that it's a word I use often, but I was always taught that the past tense of kneel is "knelt". Just to be sure, I looked it up and found that it could be either knelt or kneeled. One reference said knelt is more Britsh and kneeled is more American. They also compared it to the use of dreamt and dreamed.

I'd say knelt is correct. Sounds like either is correct.

I thought you could use either so I googled it....and you can use either.

I am really bothered by so many people ending sentences with "at"!! It's not just "Where you at?" It's so many more sentences now! I cringe every time I hear it!

Kneeled may be OK but every time I see it it just strikes me as wrong and I think "Oh No that's not right"

Drives me to distraction as it does you. Rule of grammar: Never end a sentence with a preposition!

Wonder how many people these days know what a preposition is? There's the rub.

In English, knelt is slowly giving way to kneeled. This trend is not limited to this verb; there are a few others that are losing their irregular past tense forms―or gaining an -ed form, at least. ... In American and British English, knelt is still the most common of the two.

Always said knelt, however, nothing suprises me now.

When the kids would come home and say "where's such and such at"---I would reply; "Behind the preposition"

They learned quickly.

I honestly don’t know which word I’d use since I can’t recall whether I ever have had occasion to make reference to it. Knelt when I would want to impress...kneeled when I am with my fellow New Yawkuhs.
