Amazon Forums Going Bye-Bye

I’m not sure but I believe they only started the notification process Oct 1st. It shows up as a banner in some peoples’ browser, not for others - depends on what Amazon server is being used, and hasn’t made it to all viewers yet.

”The Amazon forums are retiring October 6, 2017.
Amazon would like to thank the members of this community for contributing to the discussion forums. As we grow and evolve, we encourage you to explore Goodreads Groups for books and Spark for other ways to engage with your interests."

So, when I said a while back that it seemed to me (and others) that Amazon was trying to kill their forums by neglect and hiding the URLs in searches, and others disagreed and said everything was fine - here’s Amazon’s final decision.

And perhaps a message to all of the QVC forum participants - if dealing with the forums becomes too ugly and too much a PITA for QVC, they will look to Amazon’s decision and make their own. It might even be why they aren’t putting any effort into forum software.

Are you saying that I want these forums shut down? Just because I posted this info (many people here are aware that Amazon has forums) and a “think about it” reminder?

Honestly I've never seen discussions about any Amazon forum so whether many or a few people are aware is not important.

No, @alliswell - Amazon has long had discussion forums similar to QVC’s forums in some ways, but much broader in subjects. They were not to do with reviews or specific items purchased except for Kindles and Fires - those had their own forum - which has actually been very much like Community Chat - anything and everything. There is a Religion forum, Politics, History and quite a few others.

The new Spark forum is for Prime Members only, and is 100% geared around recommendations and reviews of tems sold at Amazon, and no general discussion.

Well I hopeQ doesn't shut down too.I don't know what I would do without all of the info I receive from everyone here and never mind the friendships...that would be sad.

I didn't know Amazon had any forums either.

One of the biggest forum losses for me was when IMDB shut theirs' down earlier this year. There was a wealth of information from people on just about any film or tv show you can think of. A little snark at times and some crude comments but nothing I ever thought was too offensive.

I'm noticing less and less places for comments posting too. Before the change of ownership of Yahoo, people could comment at the bottom of the article. But that's mostly gone. No surprise, those posting could get super-snarky.

I have looked at comments on news stories and would never be tempted to participate. The level of taunting, name calling, and vile language was bad enough but the stupidity of comments seemed to be nothing but a venue for trolls to wreck havoc. There may be a few dust ups here, but I feel like the Q posters are overwhelming sincere and willing to discuss and help. Las Vegas has been on my mind all day and a reminder of how fragile life is and the importance of small kindnesses, as in these forums.

I hope not either, @dex. I only made the comment I did because if Amazon could decide they didn’t want to waste resources on maintaining forums, it’s possible (not that I hope for it) that some day QVC could decide the same, if the forums became irritating enough to them. Amazon’s forums have been around at least 8-9 years, maybe longer I don’t know. Yes, t would be sad to lose these forums. The people at the Amazon foruns are very sad, but most of them say they’ve seen the handwriting on the wall for a year.

I was on the Amazon forums for maybe three years, then just drifted away. I agree, from what I’ve read they want Spark to be - ugh, boring. They obviously don’t want it to be anything at all like the forums and have pretty much indicated that.

I’m aware that’s exactly what it was in response to, but curious as to why she tried to insinuate that I wanted the QVC forums to be shut down and then pretended she’d said nothing of the kind.

I didn’t know theirs had been shut down, @sandraskates, but it’s interesting when you realize that IMDB is owned by Amazon.

There’s been a lot of buzz for the last couple of years that many sites of all types are shutting down their comment sections because they just don’t want to deal with it for a variety of reasons - bad publicity, potential lawsuits/liability, manpower cost to monitor them. Amazon’s forums just happen to be the latest and just happen to be similar in content to QVC with similar issues; it was a natural comparison.
