No matter how much insurance you purchase for your home, insurance companies just don't have enough money in reserves to handle the payouts from major disasters such as Harvey or Irma. They will require government assistance or likely some of the smaller ones may go bankrupt!!

Just think about the billions of dollars it will take to rebuild these cities & towns.Premium dollars collected won't even come close to the needed payouts!! Government assistance is necessary!!

Climate change must also be addressed or these incidents will keep happening!!

Oh & as far as mobile homes who am I to judge.I've seen some really fancy ones & some simple ones.I knew someone who lived in a mobile home in Florida. It was all he could afford. It was a nice little trailer & he was proud to be self sufficient. He passed away last year happy that he had not become a burden to his children!!

Looking at the news today reaffirms my belief that Florida should make this form of housing in their state illegal. Any tropical storm, not to mention tornado or hurricane, make these a dangerous housing option.

I guess it would sort of be the same for people to build wooden homes in a high-fire prone region...but people do it anyway despite the warnings. Here in Colorado there are building regulations for mobile homes and they have to secure to the ground with no air space under them. They get blown away with the high winds we have around here. But people still choose to live in them.

I think making mobile homes "illegal" is un-American. There are many, I'm guessing, whose housing options are limited by space or finances.

You also have a large population of elderly in Fla. who have chosen to make it their home in their retirement years.

While I understand concerns to force them to move with limited income or resources is cruel. What little value those mobiles have would be gone in an instant.

Makes no sense to me. For some people that's the only affordable housing option.

You never know where a tornado will hit, so how do you police this situation.

And how about telling people they shouldn't buy boats either because they get tossed around and become a hazard during a storm. Not gonna happen.

Along the street where I rent, homeowners are stillspending hundreds of thousands to rebuild on the same pieces of land Sandy surged over just a few years ago. Several will actually have larger, more expensive homes now than they had before Sandy.

I think that will be true some places in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, etc. No kind of structure is totally safe and I can't think we want to ban the only housing many can afford and then allow the wealthier to build on that land! Feels unAmerican to me.

I agree with OP - Government issues building standards for houses and high rise structures - and standards for cars - and standards for how much cement must be used in cement mixture - so why shouldn't there be a state rule/law for trailers to be cemented down and perhaps (the trailer parks) made to allow more space between units? Some in Florida just slammed up against each other. It's all about money to pack as many trailers in an acre as they can.

I don't think it will every become illegal but I was thinking the same too, as in why do people have trailers near the ocean/hurricane area?

I love the beach and used to want to live on the beach until lately. (Id never live in Florida though, due to high humidity, and i heard there are huge water bugs, and alligators).

A relative of mine just moved to S Carolina to get away from the snow up north. She was panicking as the hurricane was brewing, because at first they said they would have to evacuate, but then they changed it to no evacuating.

Not allowing trailers, really does not make sense , i saw some in flordia yesterday ,right on a bay ,they held up well they might have been pre fam type ,but allowing people to build in a area ,where flooding happens often ,really should be stopped.

Yeah, sure and people who live in wooded areas shouldn't be allowed to build there because those areas are subject to fires. People who have beach homes should be allowed to build them because beaches erode and homes can topple. People who live on hills shouldn't be allowed to do that because if they neglect to set the parking break, their car can slide downhill. And so forth and so on.
