North Georgia Storm Prep Report

My sister just texted me from Walmart and in her words "People have lost their (expletive) minds!"

According to her, the bottled water is gone, the bread aisle is a ghost town, and the traffic is literally backing up onto the main streets from people trying to get in. We never see this around here unless it's forecast to flurry.

We are north of Atlanta so the most we are probably going to get at this point is some bad wind and rain on Monday/Tuesday.

Glad to see people finally woke up though. I prepped on Tuesday and people laughed at me. Yes, you can spot a hurricane survivor when they stockpile a week ahead of time.

I have a friend who lives within commuting distance of Atlanta and another who lives in Columbus. I hope it's true about just wind & rain.

By the time Irma gets our way, she should be just about gone unless the weather people are wrong.

I am tickled that everyone is prepping for the worst but we will probably get what I used to call a good Nor'easter back in Jersey. I prepped but I didn't prepare for Armageddon.

@Moonchilde Columbus is going to get the bigger brunt of it. They absolutely should be tearing up the stores. Atlanta and parts north like us are probably more in threat of tornadoes than anything else. I am very glad to see everyone finally taking it seriously. It's been radio silence around here all week and I've been the lone nut screaming, "Prep Now!!"

No snark intended but did it occur to your sister that people who are seeking refuge from the storm from the mountainous and Savannah areas might be cleaning up the shelves because they have come your way? Just think. I live 200 miles inland, 800 miles from Miami, and we are not going to have a hurricane, albeit we might have tornadoes that spin off them but yesterday we were coming from an area far south of us and 400 miles north of Miami and cars were bumper to bumper heading toward Atlanta. People are seeking safe places.

@Nonametoday I apologize. Reflex on this board and my sincere apology.

It did cross my mind but we are way north of the city and really kind of out of the way. The hotels are off other exits miles away from us. There would be no reason for an out of towner to choose our small area for refuge unless they have family or friends in our neighborhoods which is a possibility. It could absolutely be locals grabbing stuff for their new guests. You could be absolutely right.

@TheMemphisVette That's what I'm afraid of. I think we are going to get some bad wind damage at best and tornadoes at worst.

@Laura14- I'm in Marietta. I stocked up earlier in the week, but my husband and I stopped at Publix after lunch so I could get some yogurt and a few other stock up kind of things I thought we needed.

The store was like winter storm prep busy. Very little bottled water, though the employees were restocking as we went down the aisle.

Lines at the cash registers about 4 or 5 people deep.

We got my yogurt, some Pepsi and Cheez It's for my husband (storm essentials), one pack of the water we always have on hand (we got the last pack) and a few cans of soup.

It was crazy in there.

Laura14 - I don't think your area, north of Atlanta, will be in much danger. The latest forecast for Atlanta was 40mph winds. It will be a tropical depression or tropical storm by then. I live in the Southwestern part of Georgia, and the people around here don't seem to be worried.

The water shelves in my local Walmart were partially empty...... bit there was no panic buying.

NAT: It's not only the locals buying, it is people who are passing through that are seeking shelther who are buying this up. They knew better than to try to buy in Ft Lauderdale, Tampa, Jacksonville, Pensacola because there was none there. They waited until they were far inland to buy. We are 200 miles inland and our Costco was lined up with Florida tags this morning when we went for paper products.

@gidgetgh @Carol08 Glad you guys are set! Every forecast I see we keep getting downgraded too so hopefully we'll have nothing more than a bad summer storm although a lot of people may get disappointed looking for that day off.

My take on this:

When Isabel hit, we watched but had ZERO concern because we are FAR from the shore. I mean... FAR. Annapolis is a good hour away. We did nothing more than make sure we had batteries in our flashlights.

What happened? Wind. Torrential rain, Lightening. Enough to take out more than 50% of the STATE for a WEEK PLUS power-wise. Flooding was everywhere. It was September. Still hot and sticky so no AC, no water for showers, you can't cook, no way to keep your food from spoiling. Offices didn't have power; hospital was on emergency generator. Schools were closed for a week. And all we had were strong winds, rain and lightening.

Strong weather means supplies, especially water and meals you can eat without needing to cook. Remember, 5 days with no power for us. Other parts of the state went without power for almost a MONTH. Prepare. Always. You can drink and eat it later if nothing happens but you CAN'T get it if the ****** hits the fan.

Good advice @SahmIam! I am pretty handy with the power out but then I don't have a kids under me either. People forget how much we depend on our utilities until we don't have them.

That would be horrible for me. No power means no work which means $0.00 paycheck.

No one knows the change of direction it will take. I like the advice: "Prepare for the worst; Hope for the best."

Our governor just expanded the state of emergency to 94 counties in the southern part of the Georgia. Basically everything south of Atlanta metro. Hang on to your hats!

I just saw in our latest forecast from NOAA that they are expecting Irma may possibly stall over North Georgia as a tropical depression which means lots and lots of rain.

They are recommending clearing all drains and other water collection areas to make sure you don't get any flash flooding. Might want to do a walk around and look at your storm drains and street drains if you have any near your house to make sure they are all clear.

I heard the stores ran out of bottled water so people are ordering it delivered from Amazon. Wonder why they don't just get out their pitchers and large containers and fill with tap water? I've never bought a bottle of water in my life. When I lived in Houston, I kept a sanitized 5 gal jerry can for that purpose.
