Even with a 25% reduction* through that pipeline, we would have been "ok" as long as everyone kept their normal routines. It was when everyone was topping off their vehicles daily, filling extra cans, etc. that things went wonky.

I wish I could remember the reporter I was wathcing that did a piece on this subject Friday......he explained it so well, and so clearly.

*not sure if the percentage was 25 or not but that is the number I am remembering

I was talking to someone in Dallas last night who said that a lot of stations are out of gas down there, and people are going a bit bananas about it, understandably.

I keep track of the futures prices of crude oil, and they've dropped over the past several days, from $55/barrel to $52. Usually current gasoline and heating oil prices are roughly tied to that trend, but not now. Today's increase is 0.5% for heating oil and over 5% for gasoline.

I guess the question is how high prices will go and how long they'll stay there. I guess we'll get a better sense when the waters recede and they can analyze the refinery and processing situation.

No gas lines but our wonderful gas stations raised gas from $2.25 to $2.55 yesterday afternoon. I'm sure they'll say it's because of the hurricane when in reality they are just being greedy. I'm in Ohio!!!

Every so often a gas station in the area will lower gas for X number of hours to a ridiculously low price and the line to get gas will be crazy long. I remember after 9/11 sitting in a gas line for well over 30 minutes.

here in Cali we had sharp price hikes - but no issue w/availability. with about 20% of refining ops off line, this is the way it happens. supply tightens, prices rise. hopefully the refining will be back on line sooner rather than later. i suspect that there are delivery issues in Texas due to Harvey shutdowns.

@noodleann, See my post to Sidsmom: it was being reported that futures are up....thank heavens for investment professionals: I couldn't keep up with the market....

We did it once by ourselves-made a lot of money on one stock and sold at the right time....this was back in the day before the birth of PC's....it was nerve wracking!

Do you do this as a professional? I'm just curious how that profession keeps up tracking all the data they see minute by minute....not for the weak!

Hugs,

Poodlepet2

@sidsmom, not only is highway traffic slowed, but as this storm lifts, it's dumping into the Mighty Mississippi: barge traffic will be greatly slowed down....with two major avenues of transportation being compromised, that's one of the reasons I was asking about grocery prices.

Sigh.....

Hugs,

Poodlepet2
