SF BAY AREA Heat Wave

Wow, this came from out of nowhere. Our warmest months are September and October but we are starting off with a bang. 94 in SF today, some areas a little north are expected to go up to 118, OMG.

How's everybody doing?

We are about an hour south of SF and we are expected to reach 109 according to our local weather. Even Santa Cruz may reach 99 which is pretty high for that area. Ugh But really I am not complaining with so many others suffering devastating flooding. Praying for those in Texas.

My heart goes out to citizens there....it's been my understanding that few have AC there....118 degrees???? Wow! Death Valley temperatures!

I'm just saying-people like you Noel7, reporting local events are of a real value here. The major news outlets don't seem to be reporting on anything besides Harvey. I wish TWC would talk about things like that heat wave. If we had a trip there, I would have cancelled it. Those are dangerous temperatures-don't know of too many places equipped for that kind of heat.

Places like Arizona can, but the humidity in 'Frisco, with kind of heat must be satanic.

By the way, how did your party turn out? Was it a special occasion?

I think it's OK to complain, most likely some will be dying from this weather and it's the same cause: weather extremes which have been predicted for several years.

Medical warnings are going out in this area, especially for older people, babies who are ill and those of us with asthma.

What a nice post, thank you That 118 would be an all time record breaker for that area, you're right, it's CA desert temperature.

You're also right about AC, basically no one has it here, the news reports were talking about that this morning.

Some news people have been encouraging anyone in the danger categories to go to cooling centers. I went over them, none around here at all. I'd like to kick the mayor and supes.

The party was great, a nice celebration, and I managed to limit myself with the incredible fudge cake

@rygimom, temperatures like that can be every bit as dangerous as flooding.....especially in areas where people don't have AC. The very young and old are at risk...temperatures like that can take down the healthiest of people.

There is probably going to be a heavy demand placed on electric services which is probably not able to really keep up because weather extremes in that area are virtually unknown.

Please keep us posted....and take care....be safe.

Highways and bridges aren't engineered in those parts for extreme heat expansion. No doubt, there will be reports of highways buckling.

In that heat, airlines are going to have to consider weight loads: expect slow downs for flights.....

You're right about that, too. They think the electricity grid may fail, especially with so many fans going. I don't know how we'd make it if that happens.

It's been an expected hot August but we are supposed to start getting temps in the 80's in a few days.

Hope the grid can take the extra power usage; those brown-outs are always the first thing I think of.

118 is unheard of for CA!

Wow, our friends just did a road trip up there and froze their backsides off!

Just got back Wednesday. I think they said (daytime?) temps were in the 50's and 60's. Brrrrr!!!

Hi @Cakers3 I hope the grid can take it, too. I'm pretty sure the Bay Area isn't prepared to handle it if it gets worse, there's no excuse imo, either.

That 118 is predicted for the Santa Rosa area, I don't think they've ever had anything like that.

Climate change is happening faster than they thought.

My daughter live in Redding, CA and it is predicted to be 113 today but that is not that uncommon for them. I have never been in weather that hot!

I don't think so @StylishLady

SF is basically controlled by our marine layer and the coming and going of the fog.
