topic Wal Mart Express Line "over" 20 charge? in Community Chat

I went to Wal Mart last week (I hate Wal Mart but sometimes I just can't beat the price), it was early Sat or Sun morning and few people were there yet (which is the only way I'd shop there). So I get the things I need and go to the "20 items or less" line. I had 24 and no one was in line behind me (or I'd feel guilty and go to a regular line). The kid starts ringing me up and in the middle of it he smiles and says, "I'm gonna have to charge you 10% more because you've got more than 20". I said, "Really?", and he smiles again and says, "Yeah, that can get a little expensive after awhile". Well, the smile ticked me off, but I just really wanted to get my stuff and leave, I had a lot to do. It added up to a few more dollars (4 to be exact) and I didn't feel like getting into an argument over it and it didn't even occcur to me to question it, I just figured it was some WalMart policy that I wasn't aware of (not being a regular WalMart shopper).

So, I took my stuff and left and figured I'd just never get on the Express line again if I had one item over 20.

I was talking to a friend over the weekend (a few friends, actually) who all shop at WalMart and they all told me that they never heard of such a thing, they knew of no policy like that. They told me I should go back with my receipt and talk to the manager. Well, I threw my receipt away so I can't do that. Now I'm just a little ticked off, but I wonder how this kid could get away with charging 10% extra if it's not a store policy - I assume that their receipts are checked at the end of their shift (or day, or whatever).

Have you ever had this happen?
