UPS Scam

I haven't heard of this happening, but it was posted in my NextDoor group.

This happened to my neighbor yesterday.

"Hey neighbors. heads up. I came home yesterday with a UPS notice on my door. I called UPS since I was not expecting anything. UPS states this is a scam and to alert my neighbors to be observant. I have sent copy of notice to UPS fraud department. Let's keep eyes and ears open for each other as this could be dangerous people trying to rob within our neighborhood."

I'm sure it's happening in other neighborhoods too.

Why would anyone post a "fake" UPS notice on someone's door??? WHat could they possibly hope to accomplish with that??? I am also confused.

What I thought it was is that they wanted you to sign the form and get your signature for something else. I may be wrong and it may be nothing.

Yeah, but that still doesn't make any sense.

Say you take the notice inside your home to sign, then what?

Are they hoping that you'll leave it on the door when you next leave?

Then they'll have to wait around for you to do that.

Or, say the note is signed, then the person who signed it could take it to the UPS store/office.

What good would that do the scammers?

as I said, this isn't making any sense at all.

@Sueliz I can't find Moonchilde's post. I looked through several pages of posts. I searched UPS and I even went into her posts for 5 pages and couldn't find it. She posted one about an Amazon scam.

This is what the person who posted about the UPS scam in my Nextdoor community thinks the scam is. I agree that it isn't much of a scam.

It could be as simple as getting you to call the false number and proving personal information, getting you to open your door so a thief can push themselves through to your home. You can't be too careful these days. All I know is what UPS stated. And I quote: " please forward copy of form front and back to UPS fraud department as this is a scam of some kind. Need to be street smart people especially the older community. 👍🏼😉

The first scam- Prospective burglars are leaving fake UPS delivery notices at homes. A person leaves directions for the package and the burglars come back and break and enter the home.

The second scam-Is to get the person to contact a fake UPS email address and get info and money and your computer gets a nice virus.

The third scam-Is the fake telephone call from UPS to get info and money.

The scams are verfied by UPS and Snopes.

Not everyone verifies if things are legit before responding which is why the people(scammers) stay in business

You're absolutely right @NickNack, I remembered the post because it was about getting a package the customer never ordered, but it was specific to a delivery from Amazon apparently. Could be the same type of thing going around, apparently entering the tracking number on ones computer triggers the theft of consumers personal info. My apologies for mixing up the info! If you didn't order anything, throw the notice out. Easy enough! We're afraid of everything these days. Some here won't even mention the state they live in for fear they will be found..

So these people want you to sign the form and leave it on your door so then they know you are not home and can break in and rob you??? THis is the silliest thing I have read in a long,long time. IF I do have to sign for a package I will sign the form and leave it on the front door because I might be in the shower or taking a nap when the UPS guy returns with my package. THere is no way for any burglar to know if I am home or not. AS I said too silly,for words.

I also went to the Snopes website and ran a query about this using several,different search phrases and there is absolutely nothing. ALso nothing on the UPS home page either.

As I said, even if you left the signed note outside, they would have to wait around for you to do that.

Not to mention, that the signed note could also be taken to the local UPS store/office.

Around here they practically launch the package out the side of the truck and take off on their merry way.

If you aren't waiting for anything, throw it away...

@KathyPet, I don't know if this is the same warnings referenced in the quoted post but I did find this on the snopes website. Note that it is old but that does not mean it hasn't been recently resurrected and become active again.

THis refers to a E Mail notice being sent out about a non deliverable package. THe senders wanted the receipient to reply so they could plant a computer virus. dates from 2014. has nothing to,do with what this scam is supposedly about.

I have a real,issue with people who post stuff on this or any other website that they are passing on from another source that the poster has made no attempt to verify or confirm independently before posting.
