My MRI And The Beatles

So yesterday I had an MRI, not my first so I knew what it would be like and I don't mind them at all. Before it started, the MRI tech asked me whether I wanted to listen to any music to help drown out the noise.

Me: Do you have The Beatles?

Tech: Yes.

Me: Cool - I'll listen to them.

So, just before the MRI started, I was lying on the table that would slide into the tunnel and the tech put a panic button into my hand.

Tech: This is in case you get distressed once you are in the tunnel.

Me: Can I press it if a Ringo song comes on?

Tech (laughing hard): No!

Funny!

I don't think even the Beatles could get me to have an MRI. I've had a few but can't do them anymore. The sound doesn't bother me it's closeness. Having my nose an inch away from the ceiling- nope can't do it.

@azgal Thanks - I know what you mean about the nose itch. This one only lasted 20 minutes - I've had longer ones before. Twenty minutes was about my max yesterday and I was glad it wasn't any longer.

I already have the results - they called me today. It was about when my doc and I expected, no surprises.

I had one about a month ago with dye contrast which meant an IV in the arm and it lasted about 45 minutes. I thought it would never be over, and they didn't even offer music.

That's funny. Did you have headphones or did they play it in the MRI room on speakers?

I always say anything but country music which I hate! I happen to dislike MRIs and I have to go in them every 2 years (for 2 MRIs) for my spine issues. I learned to conquer them, with a valium. lol. Anyway they just play the radio station over the speaker because I don't want headphones.. (I don't let them put covers on me either). I don't mind the banging, its the closed in I'm not keen on.

@Shorty2U I had noise canceling headphones but no music. I have back issues similar to yours, as I recall. By the time I got off that hard table I was practically paralyzed and in terrible pain. Had to sit and regain my senses before I could walk to the car.

Never say never. Hope you never have to endure having a lymphoma. You'll have several PET Scans where you lye on your back with arms over your head in a closed ring and you can't move. Oh, did I forget to mention the spinal tap that was so painful? Yep had that too.

It's like the saying goes, "You do what you have to do."

This is how my first MRI went:

The MRI Tech explained, “We’re going to move you into the machine now and You Won’t See Me for a while. “If I Call Your Name,” will you answer?”, I asked. She told me not to speak once inside -- If I Needed Someone, to press the panic button. I said, “I Will.” The tech told me to think of Golden Slumbers and said, “All you gotta do is…. Act Naturally." (oops @Pearlee!). I figured it would only be 45 minutes of Misery.

Into the MRI machine I went. “Help! Someone --- Hold Me Tight!” Midway through the exam, my nose began to itch. I couldn’t stand it any longer and pressed the panic button. No Reply. Thankfully, the itch subsided. Finally, I heard a voice above my head. “How are you doing, Sarina?” “I Feel Fine.” She Said (She Said), “Don’t worry – It Won’t Be Long!” I could just picture one tech saying to the other, "You're Gonna Lose That Girl." "Nah, she'll be okay -- as long as she Don't Bother Me!"

I Want to Tell You.....the exam wasn’t as bad as I had Imagine-d. All I could think of was….. When I Get Home, I’m going to dig into that quart of ice cream!

@Shorty2U Headphones. And I should have asked them - Michelle and Eleanor LOL - to turn up the volume because the music was too soft. Ironically, what I heard most of any of the music was Ringo's drum beat! At least the machine noises did pipe down long enough for me to hear Hey Jude clearly.

In our household the Beatles make everything better. My husband and I put their music on and we grab the dust cloths. The music is the only way to get the cleaning done with a bit of fun for the two of us.

Last summer for our 30th wedding anniversary, my husband bought us great seats to the Paul McCartney concert in our area. It was wonderful! We could not get over all the families with three generations in attendance.

@April-Rose I saw last summer's MACCA concert too, right around this time last year. It was wonderful and, like you, I marvelled at the younger generations being there too. I even said to some parents with their children, "you are raising those children right!"

And previous to last summer's concert I heard Sir Paul the autumn previous in 2015, so I saw him twice in less than a year's time. Wish I was going again this year. My sister just saw him in Tampa for the first time and loved it.

Beatles music does make everything better - even MRIs.

The music made no difference to my experience in the tube... They had bad speakers... It was hard to hear and sounded just like bad noise.... just barely audible over the BANG BANG BANG of the machine..... nope, did not help at all.

I just layed there with eyes shut trying to tell myself that I could breath... the air they had it there was not enough. I would have liked a lot of cool air blowing on my face...

it was that feeling of being stuffy.... that kind of makes you feel like you are in a coffin buried alive that gave me the creeps.

@SeaMaiden My air circulation was the same as when I was outside the tube. I didn't perceive any difference at all so that wasn't a problem.

I wonder if I could request to listen to a podcast while I was in there. I wouldn't just want silence, but with music, I would have to concentrate very hard to make sure I didn't start tapping my toes or singing along...both of which I assume are frowned upon.

@Bibione When I scheduled the appt. I was told it would take about 40 minutes, which is what my first two did indeed take (different part of my body for the first two though). I was thrilled when this one was only 20 min. esp. since in my old age I feared I might have to use the rest room as I need to frequently now! Whew - 20 min. was fine but 40 would have not been!

I think MRIs are only a real problem if you are claustrophobic - that would not be good. Although if you close your eyes, you don't know where you are then.

@Pearlee - I've never had an MRI and hope I never need one. I think the only way I could do it, is if both Elton John and Billy Joel showed up to serenade me in person.

Over the years I've had a number of MRIs....knees, spine, neck. Plus, I'm short, therefore, I am always inside that darn tube. The noise is so loud, even though they give me earplugs and headphones for music. I keep my eyes closed and pray that it is over quickly.

The good news is that I just found a new type of MRI. It is done sitting or standing with no tube at all. And, it is a weight bearing test that produces better results for back issues. I had a choice of 3 locations, all an hour or so away, but, well worth the trip not to be in that tube.

If you need an MRI, look online for this type. Literally, you sit on a chair, the machine comes right up to you for the scan, and you can watch TV while it is being done. No tube, no stress, no anxiety!!!
