@Mellie32 I see nothing wrong with the outfits you posted. Teachers do a lot more than sit at a desk (actually I would guess that sitting at a desk is something they rarely get to do).

They are also responsible for playground duty, bus duty, lunch duty.....they are on the floor with the little ones, they are rushing to the rescue outside. There are scuffles in the dirt to break up, sick kids to clean up after, and the list goes on. I would certainly never want someone to expect me to be mopping up an unfortunate "accident" decked out in a formal suit.

Cleavage baring, unable to bend over without exposing....those things should be on the "no" list in my opinion.

Something else too.....for years we were not allowed to wear open toed shoes either, and it had to do with our work comp exposure audit. It was found to be unsafe by our risk management team. They recently (couple of years ago) scaled that back a bit and thank goodness we can wear sandals now. But I do understand that sometimes the rules are made because of potential risks/financial exposure.

Having managed several offices, I've observed that often employees don't exercise a lot of common sense when selecting their wearing apparel. However, if you ever try to write a dress code, you will pull your hair out. You try to think of each and every possible violation, but somebody will come up with something inappropriate that you never thought about including in the written code. My favorite was the young lady, a recent college graduate, who came to work in a jump suit made of a flowered calico fabric that was gathered on a band at the ankle. She looked exactly like Little Bo-Peep.

When I was teaching, my focus was clothing that: washable, modest even with my arms over my head or if I was bent over, nice colors or matching, seasonable and comfortable.

Shoes had to be close toed and flat; if you ever had a 12 year old boy trip and land on your feet you'd understand.

I tried to be fashionable, but not too trendy.

Not necessarily a good look and more appropriate for casual weekend wear.

No, but the same is true for dresses and skirts, and I wouldn't ban those either.

I supposed some code is necessary but where I work it's ridiculous. And the hags here get great joy in turning in offenders to HR. 7 more months until retirement!!!

@Mellie32 wrote:

Do you think they are necessary? Do you think they're oppressive? Do you believe only certain professions should have dress codes? What do you think should be the dress code for an office? School?

yes, i totally think they're necessary. especially in places of business or worship or schools. i've seen real doozies. it's not being a prude imo. it's being decent and respectful, to others and yourself. there are other places where you can dress like a, but come on, a little decency can't hurt.
