OTHER HOLIDAYS, TOO

Why go straight to Christmas in July? Skipping Halloween and Thanksgiving? OK so not as big a money maker, but even the malls go from end of Oct. to right to Christmas decor. Store windows begin decorating w/ Christmas motifs.

Time rushes by quickly enough. Can we enjoy each holiday before running ahead to the next?

Retailers are concerned with their bottom line. Holidays are opportunities to increase that bottom line. Christmas generates the most revenue, therefore it is given the most emphasis.

Everything today is rush, rush. You can't even enjoy holidays. When I was growing up the day after Thanksgiving the Tree was up in the Walnut Room of Marshall Fields and all the Christmas decorations were up. Also, the Jewish faith looked forward to Hannukah (sp?). Back then we had live trees only so we did not buy our tree until 5 to 7 days before Christmas. However, we did enjoy Halloween, Thanksgiving and then looked forward to Christmas. Times have changed. Now it's all about the bottom line and I think it is so much in your face, you don't want to shop!

They wouldn't do this year after year if enough shoppers turned into watchers only.

Even though I'm not often buying, I did just order the TSV holiday assortment - perfect for mini gifts for my condo neighbors. With maybe 10 minutes, I ended up ordering the summer assortment which I will use primarily as part of several birthday gifts I need during the next 2 months. In that little bit of time, my order number went up just over 400.

Does that mean there were that many other orders in that time frame? If so, there are certainly buyers not talking on the Forums about not buying.

@Shanus I'm already seeing bits and pieces of Halloween. It seems the holidays are on the same schedule as seasonal clothing.

I understand people like to decorate and all that, as I do too, but honestly I am seriously not intersted in discussing Christmas in July or Halloween in August or Valentine's Day in January etc. etc. etc.

It's always the same stuff anyway. Just different sizes and colors. LOL

Now wait for it-guarantee we will see a discussion about some holiday yet to arrive.

I worked for Hallmark two years ago part time and sadly they put up Christmas ornaments in August in Walmarts and HEB stores.

@qvcfreak many years ago I also worked part time at a Hallmark store. Every July, the week-end closest to the 24th and 25th, the store would have a Chriistmas in July week-end; complete w/Christmas music and the sales associates wearing the goofy Santa hats.

Needless to say I was always on vacation for that event.

@Sylanne, I didn't make it a year. Lots of work dealing with mgmt from Walmart and HEB not providing the allotted space and then hallmark giving their deadlines. I quit, not worth the aggravation

To me all of this "Christmas in July" etc. hoopla is over-the-top. I love to decorate for XMAS and enjoy the Valerie-type shows in late October going forward, but having all of this in the summer is a bit much, imo. But I know many must love it or else QVC wouldn't do it. But it doesn't appeal to me! Kind of diminishes the magic of the season when it is spread out over six months!

And our grocery store started putting out their Halloween candy displays about two weeks ago! (Only good thing was they already had a promotional sale and I got some bags of Reese's Pieces for half price, lol!)

Two things that are guaranteed every summer, like clockwork:

1) Several days of Christmas in July on QVC.

2) Several threads about people's distaste for Christmas in July.

Obviously, many more people enjoy CIJ or else there wouldn't be so much CIJ programming.

In reality, it's celebrated by a lot of people who are not Christian. Those of us who are pass along the meaning of the holy day.

They used to have great fun Halloween shows. They've also has decor shows for Fall and Thanksgiving. They must have made the decision they don't make "enough" of a profit tp continue. Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, pop-up Halloween shops and etc will beat them on price and variety every time. They no longer want to bother.

Not really sad, as those who observe it more for the religious aspect, are happy, and those that celebrate it more for the secular aspects, are happy.

The focus of both are love, giving, gathering with loved ones, charity, and many other things.

For some, it is a holy day, for others it is a holiday, but for all who celebrate, it is truly a time of joy. And the spreading of joy isn't sad.

This seems to come up often and throughout the year but if one chooses... to base their enjoyment of the seasons on the retail environment then this is what you're going to get... Ultimately, we're all free to enjoy the holidays, the seasons and the passing of time as we see fit, but if one chooses to focus on what retail is touting, well, that's also a choice...
