Phone Interview on Friday--7/28/2017---UPDATE

Hello all:

Some of you are acquainted with my various attempts at finding full-time employment. I've been working freelance for over five years now.

Earlier this month, I posted about receiving a response to a job for an office administrator. That actually went into a black hole. No surprises there!

I had been applying for other jobs and some were in publishing. This afternoon, I received an email expressing interest in my resume and asking for a phone screen this Friday.

Wish me luck, send prayers, whatever. As always, thank you for taking the time to read.

I've done a number of phone interviews.

Find out all you can before the interview, and ask questions - let them know you're interested in the company and how you can contribute.

I've done a number of them, too. They can be very tricky. I must have applied for hundreds of jobs. All kinds. I probably have had less than 20 real interviews.

I'm older now. All they have to do is google my name and the age is there. Ouch. Fortunately, I happen to have a few book titles with my name on them (ha!). The job market is slightly better; five years ago, I applied to this company for a job and nothing ever happened.

I've revamped my resume and tweaked my cover letter to resemble those found in 2017.

Other than that, I don't have any idea why they picked me off the pile. None. This is a job with the third-largest publisher worldwide. it's with their children's and YA division.

We'll just have to see.

I did well enough. Now I have to complete the test and return it.

I am so tired that I forgot to add that passing the test is another hurdle. If I do well, I continue on in the process.

UPDATE;

Hello, all:

Just thought I would let you know what happened. The test was certainly difficult; at the same time, I encountered technical difficulties. I happened to be staying at a friend's apt. I was supposed to download the two-parts to the test and send back. Word would not open on my Mac--no matter what I tried. I switched to PC, only to find that I couldn't connect to my friend's connection. (ethernet driver, probably.) She doesn't have wifi. I did the best I could, but in the end, it wasn't enough. The other part had to be marked, scanned and emailed. It's very hard to erase printer paper and then re-scan so that you don't see the erasures. I did it twice.

I don't think I "failed" it; there were probably others who did better.

For all of you who were encouraging, thank you. Today I received three rejections and this was a third. Tough. Then I had a vendor do an "oops" and not send me a project until today. It's collapsing into another.

It is getting worse! I completed one project last Thursday. They didn't send in the invoice until Wednesday of this week! That's just sending it. If I am lucky, I will see a deposit on Wednesday. Of course, it once took four months to get paid.

Are people supposed to live on air? I really didn't feel badly about trying to get a real job.

I just found this out and I am still pretty steamed. Of course, if things play out in a bad way on the world stage, it might not matter.

so sorry to hear you are having so many problems.

my daughter wanted a job in publishing after she graduated. she had even worked for a small publishing company as an intern, but they told her that they dont hire their interns after graduation. she had to settle for another line of work.

recently though she has been studying for the LSAT after getting frustrated with her job. she will take it in september and hopefully she wil be in law school by 2018. she MAY be able to break into the publishing industry in that way.

I was in publishing for a very long time and was downsized. I have the experience. Competition is that fierce. In my case, there is an age factor.

As for law school, it is so expensive, it might not really pay to do it for publishing. Unless she has a way to pay for law school and not worry about it. Publishing doesn't pay well--only for a very few. I know so many people who went to law school and it didnt' pay off. She would be better off working getting training in paralegal studies.

I didn't start out wanting to work in publishing; I came into it in a different way. I have a masters' degree in library science. I was a librarian. There are very few jobs for librarians these days. I happened to work in two sectors that collapsed.

I always believe that "you'll get the job ur supposed to have". That's how it happened for me over the years - and I'm happy to be retired now.
