Came back, car still would not start.

We have free towing so he towed it to a shop, it came back and althought the shop go it going to point where it was driveable, it is still giving us grief.

And this almost $1000 later.

I guess my point is that you should probably just bite the bullet and either:

1.

If you charged the battery and it still doesn't start it may be the alternator. Your battery is meant to just start your vehicle, the alternator recharges the battery as you drive.

How old is your battery? Do you have interior lights or a door chime or is it completely dead after it was jumped?

Is it trying to start but doesn't? May be your starter.

It is a new battery. All the lights work and so does everything else, it cranks, it does not start. The new battery was purchased because the old battery was years old and did not hold the charge.

The car, with the old battery ran fine and got me home, but once I turned off the car, it would not start again, so I replaced the battery.

In 2002 most vehicles were made with some types of computer chips, some of which control many simple functions of the vehicles.

Used to be as simple as this with internal combustion engines.

If it has spark and gas, it will start. Not so in todays world of the same types of internal combustion engines. Friend of mine is a mechanic (now called vehicle specialist) for a GM dealership. Every 6 months he has to go to 8 hours of classes/workshops, to keep his certificate valid for that dealership.

I could type a long list of what "might be's", but it is hard enough for me to analyze a vehicle when I am right next to it. I raced cars and worked on the "old fashioned(pre-computer chip)" internal 4 stroke combustion engines. A couple of those cars had neither a battery nor a starter. We used people power to get the spark, which then ignited the gas and then the "vroom, vroom" of a started racing built engine.

Be nice if I could give you a specific, but those days of me being able to analyze vehicle problems have been replaced with tools of the trade that tell the "vehicle specialist" where to look to find the source(not the symptom) of the vehicles failure to "vroom, vroom".

hckynut(john)

It sounds like your alternator or your starter.

The battery will get you a few miles to get you home but if the alternator is bad it's not recharging the battery as you drive so dead battery on your next attempt.

A starter will usually give you a hint when its going bad. It will crank a few times, act hard to start but will 'catch' eventually and start.

Did they test either srarter or alternator or just sell you a new battery?

I just went through this when the battery connections were cleaned up and reconnected by my friend. It wouldn't start, it wouldn't even crank. It ended up being the alarm system.

It would be odd that it would suddenly be the starter, etc.

Not much help here but if you have an alarm system maybe check that out.

Good Luck!

@chiclets The reason my friend cleaned up the connectors to the battery, it was giving me a hard time to start. Please have someone check the connectors (if that is the word for them) They may have to be reconnected to the battery. Also just because it's a "new" battery doesn't mean it's a good one. It can happen...

To the posters that say AAA towing is free, it isn't, you pay for it with your membership. They are not mechanics. They will tow, bring gas if you run out, etc.

Hope you can have the battery tested and see if the connections are on good.

AAA will tow your Jeep to ANY garage that you want.

I am unclear as to why you don't want to do that.
