‘I Thought It Was Empty.’ Dad Fatally Shoots Daughter During Gun Safety Lesson

Story

"I was showing the boys the gun and told them not to ever play with it because it can kill someone, then she walked in in the room and I pointed it at her and pulled the trigger, thinking it was empty," he continued, according to People.

Me: "HOW COULD IT BE EMPTY DAD WHEN YOU IN FACT, LOADED IT????"

Story

Both of Hummel's sons, one 9 years old and the other 10 years old, told police that the gun wasn't loaded at first. However, Hummel's 9-year-old son said that his father later loaded the gun, according to People. Shortly after, Olivia walked in to the room, and Hummel — who his son said forgot the gun was loaded — turned around.

Moments before shooting, Hummel allegedly said, "See don’t play with guns" and then shot, the 9-year-old told police, People reports.

Hummel has since been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, battery resulting in death to a person less than 14 years old, reckless homicide, and, in addition, two counts of neglect of a dependent, People reports. Hummel, who has entered a not guilty plea, faces 20 to 40 years on the neglect of a dependent resulting in death charge, which is a Level 1 felony, according to People.

One of the first things my dad told me re guns, was to never point them at anyone else, even if you knew they were not loaded. And he had one gun that was put up all the time.

My husband told my kids the same thing.

I would never point an unloaded gun at a person, let alone a child and pull the trigger. I don't understand this man.

How the heck did he not know it was loaded, when he himself loaded it? You also don't need to point it at anyone to show them how not to use it. I find this whole story fishy.

Each and EVERY time you handle a weapon, you are always to assume it is loaded and check it. Even if you personally unloaded it and set it down. You still must recheck that it is in fact unloaded when you pick it back up. When passing an unloaded gun to another person, the receiving person must also recheck to make sure it is unloaded, even if that person witnessed the gun being unloaded. That is gun safety. Also, never point a gun at person or animal unless you intend to shoot to kill.

I am a longtime NRA member and proud gun owner who carries concealed. I cannot believe the stupidity of the father.

Seems to me never pointing a gun pretending you are going to shoot is part of safety training. Guns are not toys.

I see I made a type, I meant to write, I would never point an unloaded gun at a person. My mind is just gone.

I agree, something sounds fishy. He was teaching his boys about guns and what not to do and turns around and points a gun at his daughter and actually pulls the trigger. What was he actually trying to teach his kids. The image and lesson for those two boys is contradicting. Loaded or not, why point a gun at your child. I can't imagine what his daughter must of felt in that moment.

Sometimes I am weary of the media and their spin on stories so I hope there is something more to it cause otherwise, just wow.

@aprilskies don't think there's any media "spin" to this. His boys told the police what happened. It is what it is, unfortunately for the boys and the poor little girl.

I read about this, so very sad. I can't imagine what the father was thinking ... and I'm totally fine with people having guns, my dad did, my brother does ... but I do think you need to attend training before getting a license.

My Neice's husband was in the Army, and now a Police Officer, he went along with my hubs, and his brother to do some "target practice" .... he stressed safety, and even though our guys were trying, they committed so many "safety mistakes" ... (finger on trigger, pointing gun around, forgetting they had gun in hand, and gesturing with it) ...

Safety, and training are so important ... all the gun safes in the world can't protect you from someone who doesn't know what the heck they are doing, and is intent on being an idiot.

@Pandalady, I'm not sure. I haven't read anything about the mom. I hope there is one in the pic because those boys will need her. I feel so so bad for them.
