Why is it always men?

I don't know the statistics, but almost all of these shootings we now have to endure are perpetrated by men. Sometimes a woman is involved, but by far it is men. All kinds of different reasons and scenarios of course . . . but it seems it's the men who decide to solve their issues with a gun.

Because they are cowards. It's easy to stand at a distance and squeeze a trigger. Why bother to try to work it out?

This isn't surprising as men are more likely in general to commit acts of violence. I think a Dept of Justice study said men committed 75% acts of violence while women only accounted for 20% and the remaining cases the victim didn't know the gender.

My question is why are we seeing an uptick in violent crimes lately? The news last night had a scary special on road rage with suggestions on how to handle it: don't lower your window and don't make eye contact, do not engage.

Maybe men are treated more poorly? Have more stress? More problems? Feel more helpless? Feel more responsibility?

Who knows? But it makes you feel like maybe men are under stresses that are not recognized enough by society.

All we have to do is look at history and society for the last hundred years or so to know that men are not treated more poorly than women. I don't even know where to begin with this one...

Some psychologists and sociologists believe that men were shaped over time to be warriors. We've all heard the term Survival Of The Fittest. Men are usually stronger than women, a definite advantage for getting what they want.

More so than women? Somehow I seriously doubt that.

I had the same reaction as the OP - what is it lately that makes anyone think shooting someone is a way to solve a problem? In this case, it was a doctor who did the shooting. Someone who took an oath to "do no harm"; indeed to save people's lives.

There is no excuse, other than being threatened and in danger of your own life, to shoot someone. Marriage problems? Work problems? Whatever - absolutely no excuse. And 9 times out of 10, the shooter takes the coward's way out and shoots himself after he's caused harm to others, sometimes (often) innocent bystanders.

Maybe because they're raised to take charge more.It's an old fashioned thing but even today there are those men who still feel superior .

There has been a slight uptick in violent crime but mainly in big cities (and mostly attributed to gangs) over the past year and a half. It is still nothing compared to 1980s and early 90s numbers. They don't know if it is just a blip because criminologists usually look at data from at least 3-5 yrs to show true trends.

I saw this morning on the news, a man shot a 16 yr.old girl drving in the head,just because they were coming to afork in the road,and she was getting ahead of him!!!!!

In some areas crime has gone down. Gee, I haven't even heard of gang violence in CA for a long time.

I was thinking specifically of hate crimes which have gone up and are alarming. And crimes against young girls, the 17 year old girl who was beaten to death with a bat recently and thought to be the result of road rage, and the numerous reports lately of men killing their children because of problems with their wives.

Both men and women have stress, but some people ar more aggressive, unwilling to accept responsibility for their mistakes and add a firearm, you've got a disaster.

Yes, you're right in most places it has gone down. Mostly larger cities with populations over a certain numbers are the places where there has been a slight uptick. Of course there are some exceptions for small towns where the numbers have gone up but that hasn't been a consistent number.

Despite hearing on a daily basis about violence, we are actually living in one of the calmest and least violent periods in history. We just have more access to 24/7 tv and news and social media which makes it feel much more violent but the numbers don't support that.

Edited to add: Just now noticed I missed your response about gang violence in Cali. I read too quickly. I guess it depends on where you live but in LA there has been an uptick in gang violence in the last 3 yrs.

I think even in 2017 males are still sometimes raised and socialized differently. As far as being open about problems, seeking help, talking about feelings. Combine that with guns being viewed by SOME (I emphasize that word strongly) as an extension of, symbol of, manhood and there you go.

Women commit plenty of crimes and murders. But the mass shooting thing is almost always a male perpetrator. I'm sure there is plenty of research. I think in general women internalize problems and take things out on themselves in unhealthy ways, whereas more men externalize them and blame others and have pent up rage. That is a generalization and of course there are always exceptions. But I think there are societal factors and individual factors.

I am pretty good. How have you been? I have just been taking some time off and spending it at the beach mainly. It has been nice. I have had my grandson the whole week and the rest of my family just came down yesterday.

Yes, hate crimes have gone up. Most definitely.
