WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOME PEOPLE TODAY???

A girl celebrating her 21st birthday with her cousin driving in a car and she had to stop for a light and a man approached the car and threw acid in her face and threw some on her cousin's body (windows were down). You can read the rest online. If some of these loonies are not shooting innocent people they are doing something else crazy. I sincerely hope the media opens up about mental illness more so hopefully some of this stops! Prayers go out to both girls.

When I read about it -- without knowing anything about the vicious person who did the horrific act -- my gut reaction was that this was a "hate crime." I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Random acts of violence. This is not new. Social media delivers bad and good news faster with each passing day. Thriving on bad news. Can't bring myself to read this story. Very sorry for the loved ones.

A normal sane person does not go around throwing acid on strangers. We had a guy here in NM last week kill 5 people including his mother, two other family members and 2 strangers who crossed his path. When he appeared in court he was mumbling incoherently and making faces.

We used to have facilities where the insane were locked up and received treatment. Now all we've got is one hospital for the criminally insane, where this guy will probably end up. You have to be in really bad shape to be admitted.

These hospitals are extremely expensive to operate, and it seems the states decided they couldn't afford the luxury of housing and treating those with mental illness. If you live in a big city, you probably hear about incidents like this every week. There are people who have been arrested dozens of times, terrorize neighborhoods and are turned loose because they're too far gone to understand legal proceedings. They are among us right now.

@golding76 I thought that too but did a bit of research and two things popped up from UK papers/sites:

1) Acid attacks are quite common in the UK. It's a tactic used between young men in rival gangs to "get" someone (instead of using guns, they go after someone with acid).

2) There are quite a few who believe this was an "honor" attack as acid is, again, common for this purpose.

Sadly, there are those who want to know why this attack is making headlines when the vast majority do not. I sincerely hope they find the person who did this and prosecute him. Healing and peaceful vibes to both victims.

Most people with mental illness(es) are not violent; that's a fact.

Unfortunately, what's become increasingly common is retaliation and revenge.

People care less and less about the consequences of their actions, as long as they get the last 'word' in.

The human psyche is complicated and fragile, but there are always helpers.

Look for and focus on them.

OMG! That is so awful. I can't imagine how anyone could,do such a thing and live with what they've done.

I have a SIl who runs. Often people drive by in cars and throw ice and soft drinks and worse on her from the window as they drive by.

I just don't get it. They are so messed up and have an empty soul.

Acid attacks are a common way of exacting revenge and punishment in India. This from an article in Huff Post.

"Acid attack is not something unheard of in India. It has shocked the conscience of our nation again and again - with mutilated faces, unbeaten survivors coming to the frontlines to share their horrific stories, and families driven to bankruptcy supporting recovery costs. The Indian Penal Code was modified in 2013 for the first time to add regulations tailored to acid attacks. But have we done enough? Do enough of us care? Why should we care? Why should we care anymore than we do for general fight for women’s rights and safety in India about acid attacks."

GB has a high population of Indians. It would be interesting to know the ethnicity of these victims.

You're right, it's not new but several recent studies have shown a significant increase in violence recently.

@Kachina624 The person who committed this acid attack may or may not have a diagnosable mental illness. You can't assume the attacker is mentally ill just because it seems like there couldn't be any other reasonable explanation. Some people are very spiteful and angry at the world, but they don't necessarily fall under the heading of "mentally ill."

As far as sanity is concerned, are you saying the person who did this isn't legally responsible? That's quite a leap at this point in time. Even if the person is mentally ill, jumping to the conclusion that he/she is insane doesn't make sense. Most people who commit violent crimes are not psychotic and do not fit the legal definition of insanity.

As far as the hospitals go, deinstitutionalization happened. It wasn't that the states just decided the hospitals were too expensive.

Thank the "do gooders" of the world, several years ago they demanded that people can not be locked up against their will. Hence, nut jobs running loose on the streets, a huge increase in the homeless population, just to name a couple of "groups". Therefore, the "do gooders" got what they ask for. An ugly truth.
