How Hot Is It In The West?

Record heat and it's scary. Climate change is hitting the West hard.

How hot is it in the West? Let us count the ways

1. Some planes can't fly

2. Heat records are being shattered

3. Wildfires are burning

4. Power is being knocked out

5. Roads buckle under the heat

Too hot, for sure. It's just too early for it to be this hot. It was 101F here yesterday. Upper 90s for the next week. It's not even summer until tomorrow! ugh. I hate summer so much and the summers here just get longer all the time. /rant

I remember years ago over 20 driving up to Lake Tahoe from SF and stopping in Sacramento that was 107. Please don't tell me about dry heat. It felt like the ground was melting. You could hardly breathe it was so hot. I don't know how people do it that live there and in AZ and other parts out West that experience very hot weather. I will take the cold any day over heat. I hope people stay indoors as much as possible in AC and stay safe.

Northern California and Southern California have always been very different.

SoCal always had the heat, NorCal is traditionally cooler and wetter except for some inland areas.

We are lucky enough to have the fog cooling us off a lot of the time, but it all but disappeared when we had the drought. Climate cchange has hit us hard.

hot in the valleys around LA - 90's but dropping off to 80's in a few days. i remember a year when we were hot from January to November - no June gloom, no winter rain to speak of........every year is different. one year we had the heat in July then went cooler in August.

I'm with you! People in SF rarely have AC, it's always been cool here, but not anymore.

We decided to have work done on the house so we could get some form of AC. We had men in all last week getting started. We're going to have to replace a lot of windows to get there, SF doesn't have the kind that open from bottom to top, they are mostly Victorian style.

My parents have a home in Indian Wells, my grandmother lived there year round.

I don't mind heat, but I don't know how she did it. I don't think anyone ever visited in the summer months!

You acclimate to where you live. I have lived in So Cal at the beach and now in the Sac area. There's air conditioning everywhere here so yes, it is hot when you get in the car and if you're walking, but other than that there's AC. You just don't plan outdoor activities when it's this hot. Now in So Cal, at the beach, used to be you never needed air conditioning. Not anymore. So many houses and restaurants don't have it yet they're getting 90-degree weather at the beach. That's horrid.

@Katcat1 - add humidity that - we've had 100 here in Indiana before, but add to that humidity and it feels like 120 - feels like you are breathing fire - humid fire!

I've been told that eventually no one will be able to live in Arizona. The tremendous heat will be too dangerous. Currently now, you have to be careful touching a door knob in that heat.

I have lived here in CA my entire 66 years. It is no hotter than it has been in years past. We go through cycles. I remember growing up with the temperatures in excess of 100. It has been overcast in May and early June. Our heat is dry, thank goodness. I truly believe there is overreaction to what storylines the media create each day.

Not everyone acclimates and there's no AC around here. Not in malls, not in theaters, etc. There are also NO cooling centers for the elderly and disabled.

There are medical conditions where just being in the sun and heat makes you sick. Many of us are constantly warned not to go out in the sun, and sitting inside in hot buildings can be torture.

I don't know where you live @kjae but yes, it is hotter than before, the weather experts have charted that.

Our ocean is also hotter, which is why so many sea mammals are washing up dead on the shores.

When I went out about half an hour ago to bring breakfast and clean water for the little birdies, it wasn't even 80 yet. But, man, I just can't handle it.

If that weren't enough, then this bee starts flying around my head. Well, anybody who's known me for more than 5 minutes knows that bees TERRIFY me. Of course, then my temperature goes up quickly, too. But I just started shaking and could barely put out the food and water before hauling it back in my house. I swear - if I didn't have to go outside at all, throughout summer, I would not.

I even had to change my dentist appointments to April and October because I was on a Feb and July schedule and there was no way. The Feb appointment was fine with me but in July - nope.
