AGAIN! Is anyone else bothered by this filler word?

It started several years ago when Bruce Makowsky used to sell his purses on QVC. He'd begin his discription of a brand new handbag with, "Again! The hardware...the color..." I did a double-take! Again? Wht's he talking about? We've never seen this before! How can this be a repetition? What does he mean by, AGAIN? Did I miss something?

Fast forward to present day on the "Q" and that's almost all anyone says! Lori Goldstein uses it the most when presenting never-before-seen items. "Again!" The worst example was when she was talking to a caller. The caller said she got it in the yellow. Lori responded, "Again, how long have you been wearing yellow?" That's when I realized that "again" has truly become a meaningless filler word and has lost all meaning. It would be so great if everyone could remember the real meaning of AGAIN as a repeat of something that was seen or said before. There is no AGAIN for something new. RIGHT? (another peeve word). LOL!

I'm with the OP. Lori Goldstein uses it ridiculously - practically every other word. And the OP is right, she uses it mostly saying things for the first time - it isn't even really "again."

Agreed! Also, a vendor who says, "so, so pretty ( or soft, or whatever), about 10 times an hour, & a host who says, "You absolutely can ( wear, buy or whatever), also many times per hour make me crazy, for some reason!

I've never noticed "Again" being overused. However, I never noticed some of the other repetitive words/phrases that other people have mentioned over time.

I will say it is very, very difficult to stop the excessive use of a filler word/phrase. When I was in my late teens, I had the bad habit of saying "you know". Drove my Dad crazy! After he heard it too many times, he started interrupting me each and every time I said it. Drove me crazy! Eventually I stopped using the phrase, but only after a lot of aggravation on both our parts. As much as I hated him doing that to me, now I'm so thankful that he did.

@DeniseColo Do you watch a LOGO show? For those who do, I think all the "agains" from Lori and the "real quicks" from Amy when she is hosting are impossible not to notice.

@Pearlee - I never noticed the "real quick" phrase until you mentioned it on here awhile back. Now I hear Amy say it all the time...so thanks a lot!! Just kidding . It's funny how some of us don't notice some of these things when they are so noticeable. Next time I watch, the "again" thing will probably stick out like a sore thumb to me.

I haven't either. I don't think I've ever heard it used as a filler word. On QVC or anywhere else.

I listen to hours of recordings of people in natural conversations all over the globe on a daily basis, and "again" as a misplaced starter is a nonstarter. It ain't happening. Maybe in the QVC environment, but not in the business world, medical field, or academia have I heard this. Maybe it'll happen, but it's so obviously wrong that I doubt it.

"So," on the other hand, is used to start and, maddeningly, to end sentences by seemingly everyone. The words "just" and "actually" are often thrown in when they don't make sense, and everything is really, really whatever, or very, very--always twice.

One thing that really nettles me on QVC is that faux maternalistic line, "there's only so many to go around," like the overpriced gewgaw is a cookie and we're dimwitted children hoping we get one. It's a transparent and silly attempt to get us to place that order, but I think it's insulting.

the "so" word sticks out to me also because hubs uses it all the time. i suspect it's something he picked up from work.
