Canine Influenza

Here in the Carolinas canine influenza is spreading, esp. at dog shows.

Symptoms include coughing, watery eyes, fever, lethargy and it can go into pneumonia, killing dogs.

It is highly contagious to other dogs and possibly cats as well. No threat to humans

There is a vaccination, which our vet is giving; we are getting Red vacinated tomorrow.

I am putting this out here instead of in Pet Lovers Forum since more people read this forum.

So far, this flu has been confirmed in FL, GA,SC,NC, with deaths in SC and NC.

Check w/your vet for more info. Our vet will not accept a dog for grooming or boarding without being fully vaccinated against this flu.

If it starts moving West, I'll definitely have my dogs vaccinated. They aren't exposed to any other dogs. They had their shots last week and the vet didn't mention it.

Thanks, @maestra. We're in California and have close contact with our vet because of some issues with our dog, but she hasn't mentioned it. We'll ask her.

She did mention that we should be especially careful regarding heartworm right now and had us switch to something that works for that along with fleas, just in case. I don't know whether this is a only a local concern.

Vet here (CA) did not mention anything either. She did recommend the Leptosporosis vaccine though since she said they can get bacteria from rodents and there are more rodents now since the weather we had. It is a series of 2 the first year and then one annually. I thought the chance of my dog getting it was small, but I did have her get the vaccines.

I live in California and this last weekend there were close to 3000 dogs at the Woofstock dog show in Vallejo. These dogs travel from all,over for the dog shows. It is no surprise that this dog flu is spreading. We recently traveled to Texas and our vet suggested Lepto shots and the flu shots.

@suzyQ3 Could it be because of all the rain you had and a proliferation of mosquitos which carry heartworm disease?

@Kachina624, that certainly makes sense, but I don't really know. We are certainly seeing more mosquitos this year.

@maestra You have to be so careful with respiratory things. I know I had an ancient veterinarian who used to tell us to stay away from our cats and dogs (no face kissing, etc) when we had any kind of lung ailments - like bronchitis.

He wasn't worried about us, he said we could pass them to the cat or dog, rofl.

If I get a cold I get super paranoid around my birds - Dr. Fuller would be proud.

It is also in Tennessee. It spread at a boarding kennel. Two dogs were boarding there that had been at a dog show in Georgia. They got it there and brought it to the boarding kennel.

Since Frankie is groomed I am having her get the vaccine on Tuesday. It's a two-part vaccine that you have to repeat in 3-4 weeks. I have titers for all vaccines except rabies and bordatella and don't believe in over vaccinating. From what I've read about this strain of the flu it spreads very easily. If dogs are exposed to it there is 100% chance that they'll get it according to the article that I read.

That's what is so threatening about this flu virus. We are keeping Red away from other dogs, even on the street.

This is the notice sent out by AKC a couple weeks ago. I do take my dog to agility trials and have spoken to my vet and they disagree on a couple points. Suggest speaking with your vet to address your specific dog and your specific circumstances.

It is not here in Ohio however, I almost had to board my dog last month and the place was requiring a canine influenza shot. I wasn't at all happy with her having to get another shot, especially for something like that. Luckily I didn't have to board her.

I just read an article about canine influenza on-line. Hoping it doesn't spread our way.

Sadie and Molly (my beagles) went to vet on Sat. for their shots...We heard about it and our vet in NC had just gotten in the vaccine.

I posted the above. After reading an article written by Dr. Jean Dodds re: the flu vaccine I cancelled my appointment. http://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/151236230526/new-flu-viruses-dog#.WUANDHXyv-b I really respect Dr. Dodds' opinion on vaccines and have followed the protocol she recommends, including having titers done.

I may change my mind later if the flu vaccine spreads greatly in Tennessee, but for now I'm not going to get it for Frankie.

We had an exceptionally mild winter this year. We are expecting more fleas due to only a few days of freezing temperatures. It might affect the life cycle of mosquitos as well. To make matters even worse we've had unusually wet weather for several months so it looks like we are in for a rough time. I have two senior dogs so I will have to be even more cautious now.
