If your hair is gray do you dye it a color?

Well I left my hair go and did not dye it for almost 4 months. I wanted to see just how gray I am. lol. I am a red head and I used to brag that red heads don't go gray early. Wrong. I started getting light grays in my late 30s and from then on I colored my hair red. Its not my exact natural red but it's nice when I dye them.

When I left them go and did not dye them, I was getting compliments at first on my natural red with the grays in. But now its been long that I haven't dyed them and they look bad (to me anyway).

So anyway, today I got my hair cut very short for Summer. I see now that I have gray on the top and the back bottom half is white! Gasp! (There is still some of my natural red through out though too)

I will be dying my hair tomorrow morning! lol.

Oh my husband on the other hand has salt and pepper hair (more salt than pepper now) and oh he looks so handsome. Why is it most men look good w gray but not most women?

Anyway hes younger than me to begin with and I have become self conscious of that as we age, so I'm going to color it so I don't look way older. My husband doesnt care if Im gray or not gray but yep I am now vain in my older age. lol.

MOST natural redheads go grey very young and when they do - it is white, not grey. Often redheads grey in streaks of color too. I had a white streak along the rt. front of my hair by the time I was 25. I always blamed it on the stress of being a nurse. By the time I was 34 my hair was all white in the front and more white than color in the back.

There is no right or wrong. Do whatever makes you happy. Stopped color process five years ago never regret my choice. Receive compliments regardless I'm the only one who's opinion counts. When I decided told myself could always color. Interestingly! Mine brightens my face high and low silver streaks bring out my green eyes. To anyone who might be interested YouTube videos on going natural abundant.

As I said on the other thread I just finished my transition to gray/white hair. I'm still getting used to the new me but I wouldn't go back. It is so freeing! I have a short pixie cut and I recently saw on YouTube several different ways to style pixies. It's been fun trying different styles.

I colored my hair for many years to hide the gray. I stopped about 5 years ago and love it. My gray is white so it's a great color. It's so much easier than coloring every month.

I would let it go, but at 66, while I definitely have some gray, I still have dark roots so I continue to color it.

My mother finally let it go at 88 and had beautiful white hair. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

My mother dyed her hair.....I color my hair. We go gray early in my family, I have no doubt that I'm totally gray now. The grays started coming in seriously when I was in my late 30's and I've been coloring my hair ever since. My natural color was a dark brunette, I color my hair black now. I like that black hair/dark brows/bright lip look. My hair grows quickly so, I have to color it every month. That's a bummer. I like the look of gray hair with a cool, modern hair cut on other women but not for myself.....not yet....I'm only 57. My husband's had thick, healthy "young" hair. He's salt&pepper and it looks good on him but he recently started using a Men's shampoo that deposits color because he doesn't want to be "too gray". He's 57 too and he works with group of people who are much younger, he thinks and acts "young" so his age isn't a factor but he does think that if he went totally gray, he'd be viewed as "that older guy" and he doesn't want to be in that "box".

I don't like gray roots ... so I opted to go blonde when I started to get gray. I've been lightening my hair since 1989.

I did have an "episode" in 2011 that I though I'd stop ... that lasted from August to February. I hated the way I looked "au naturel" - so back to blonde and this is where I'm staying.

I use Feria 91 ... it colors the white hair just a bit and lightens the brown hair enough that it looks like my hair has been highlighted. Very happy with the look.

not me. I'll hit NIce & easy till I'm in the coffin. Nothing ages you more then a mop of ugly ol' grey hair. You automatically assume the person is over 60

I applaud the others who give up the bottle, but, I'll always have a spare

I still let my stylist of over twenty years color mine and went just this past Friday, too afraid to do myself. She was more shocked I told her to take four inches off my waist length hair that if let the gray grow out she would probably faint dead away.

I started turning gray back in the early 80's at only 22 years old so I have been coloring a long time. Started doing blond shade instead of brunette back in 1996 since it shows less gray. I am not ready to let my "Grandmother" status rule my hair color yet but I am not going to go into my 60's in a few years with hair down to my waist. Slow process but fast years going by. My dear Mom looked lovely with the all "white" hair she finally let show through the last few years of her life so I have a good example to draw from.

@Shorty2U I bet the red is lovely and I am sure the gray will be too whenever you are ready.

Certain shades of gray hair is nice. I prefer my hair dye. I am not gray all over, just a little bit here and there,

I'm trying to grow mine out. I've colored my hair for 45 years and am tired of it. Don't really mind if I look my age. After all, most people know after a certain age that a woman is coloring her hair.

My natural color is a medium auburn brown but I've been coloring it the last few years a dark blonde so the gray roots don't show too much.
