I got a letter in the mail from NYC Department Of Consumer Affairs. Being of a suspicious nature I'm wondering if it's on the up and up.The letter states the department is investigating Penn Credit Corporation. Now I did call them once or twice on this and filed a complaint ( Penn Credit left a threat of money owed and possible jail time, a scam). I called at least 1 1/2 years ago and really don't have anything to add. The letter states to fill out the survey provided, call, or E-Mail. If I don't respond they will call me. The letter looks legit, I really don't know what more I can tell them as it was a while ago. I guess I'll call the number on Monday.

I would first call the dept of consumer affairs to discuss the legitimacy of those communications.

It sounds like they are following up on your complaint. I think I would lookup their number and call to verify.

I agree with @GCR18. I would also call them directly, not use a phone#, email addy, etc. that they provided in this email.

It may seem like a long time since you filed your complaint for them to finally be responding to your complaint now, but many gov't agencies such as this have incredible backlogs of cases.

When your originally called & filed a complaint did you get a case or claim number? If so, this number should be on the recent letter you received. This is another way to figure out if the letter is legit.

There is no claim number, I'm sure I got one but it's been so long I probably couldn't find it even I have it. The questionnaire wants my name, address, phone number, Email address. They want to know if I was a NYC resident when I made the claim and to whom (FTC). I wonder if I don't respond, will they call me (if they have my phone number already why ask for it again)? I can't add anything more than what I originally told them. I think I'll wait to see if they call me ( I'm sure I'm not obligated to respond). Today's day and age you can't be too careful.

I agree about calling them, BUT - don't use any phone number that is on the form. Look them up and make sure the number you are calling is legit.
