Strange Phone Call

Just answered the phone, said Hello, a few second pause then a lady says Sally & I replied Yes, then she hung up . I have read about scamers wanting you to say yes so they can use it to prove you wanted to purchase an item. Does anyone know what I should do to protect our accounts? Thank You So Much

My recommendation is to not answer if you don't know who is calling. Everything that is a number I don't know, I just block and never EVER pick up.

next time someone says Sally and it's not a number you recognize just say who's calling. They'll hang up or it may be someone you hadn't talked to. Don't know what you can do to protect your accounts

I keep my landline off the hook all day, all night. Too many telemarketers, and I'm through running or almost tripping just to answer their calls. It works!

When I don't recognize the caller ID phone #, I answer with "No!",

not hello, and not yes.

Have no idea what they are trying to trap you into.

I have been asking lately, even today with our phone co.

Like @chickenbutt I never answer landline or cells without knowing who is calling. If important to make contact, I know the caller will leave a message. 95% of the time no message left and, if I check, I frequently discover they are crank calls. I've become aggressive about blocking numbers and it has resulted in a decrease of these scammers. I'm usually away from the phones (a captive in the car, so I never answer the car calls unless I recognize the number) so I might check phones every couple of days. I don't sweat it...just accept it as a reality and deal with it.

If you still have the number google it and sometimes you can see it is a scammer. Don't answer anymore. If they don't know who they are calling then ask who are you calling. I just posted on these scammer phone calls. It is getting bad.

I don't know how they do it but to be secure in them not abusing your information, I would alert any credit card companies I have, maybe even ask for a new card, also my bank, any other's that could use my voice to purchase something. Also you could place a fraud alert with the 3 credit reporting companies.

I received a call from Mississippi today and the guy on the other end yawned while I was picking up. I then asked him who is this and without answering my question said I just won MegaBucks. I told him to send me the check and hung up. About 20 minutes later I got a call from Alabama....didn't answer it and blocked it and then blocked the first one.. not that it does any good they just keep spoofing or whatever it's called. I don't know why I answer calls from areas I don't know anyone.

I so agree- I never answer a call from a number I do not recognize. Just like I never answer the door if I am not expecting anyone.

Exactly! Maybe if people thought of it like that they would stop answering these calls.

don't pick up the phone...that in itself encourages more phone calls because it is registered as a live line......you are much better off letting it go to answering and then blocking even though it is a pain...yes, spoofing is a reality but my scammers have decreased since I've started blocking. Every couple of days I go through my phone and block almost all the calls as I check them online. Finally it is beginning to result in fewer calls coming in.

"Check your credit card, phone and cable statements carefully for any unfamiliar charges. If you suspect you have been victimized, call the billing company and dispute anything you did not authorize. The earlier you identify the unauthorized charges on your account, the easier it will be to recover any lost money."

I had a voicemail message the other day that was an automated message saying if this is VaBelle press 1. After the 3rd time it said, by not hanging up you acknowledge that you are VaBelle and blah blah blah.

I matched the timestamp on the voicemail to a number on my caller ID and googled it. Nothing came up for it, so I'll have to see what I acknowledged.

@VaBelle35 Don't Don't Don't press the message. I'm hoping what you are saying is that you received three messages, not that you pressed any numbers. Unknown calls and messages are best left alone...acknowledging them makes the situation worse.

Curiosity killed the cat. What I grew up hearing. I'm tempted to pick up some time thinking "what if", then, common sense takes over just hit 'block' on my HSN CAll Blocker machine.

I never ever answer a call unless I recognize the name or caller's number and I cannot understand why some people answer calls from a unknown name or number. 90% of the time they leave no message. AT the end of every day I scroll through the missed calls list and block all those numbers that appear.
