Sorry if this thread has been on before, but has anyone else had their DNA tested? I did and got my results. Part of it didn't surprise me, but some others did. So interesting!

@Patriot3, I ordered the Vitagene DNA test but I haven't received it yet. I'm not looking for ancestry origins, I'm more interested in genetic SNP's & mutations since an allergist I saw last year is convinced that I might have the MTHFR mutation & the COMT-MAO mutation based on symptoms that I have.

There was a story on FB for ages about a set of identical twins who had their DNA tested and they got different results.

We did Family Tree DNA testing back in 2006 - but our only concern was to know our Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups.

We had already traced our ancestry back about 500 years. We were able to follow their paper trail.

I don't trust those for profit companies that advertise on tv and everwhere else, it seems. I have read about people who submitted samples to two companies and got very different reports, significantly different. Or siblings who get different reports. The trust factor just isn't there for me. I'd probably do it if I knew of a reputable source that was not in it for the money. But only in a palor game sort of way. Knowing what region my very distant ancestors came from has no bearing at all on who I am.

I did Ancestry DNA and am happy with it. While the ethnicity estimates are interesting the best part for me as an aspiring genealogist is that it shows your DNA matches and this can lead to some breakthroughs with my family tree, or at least show that I am going in the right direction with some lines.

When I first got my results, and then looked at my matches, my uncle showed up under the "close relative" category and I did not even know he had tested. Also, many people I had already talked to and new to be relatives had taken the test and matched to me. I am finding it to be very accurate. Of course, it lists many people that I do not know how they are related and this is usually because they have not connected their family tree to their DNA profile or because they have not gone back far enough with their trees.

I have also had my parents do this and so now it allows me to see which of my DNA matches comes from my father's line and which from my mom's.

Those who consistently bring up "how can that be?" And "doesn't make sense" and "that proves it's fake" commentary might understand the "whys" of certain results if they read the many articles online as to how genealogical and ancestry DNA testing works, and the long and detailed FAQs on the various sites. But these are also people predisposed to not want to believe anything accurate can come from the testing and want to believe it's a fraud, so no, they would never do that; it's just easier to say it's all bunk - which of course it isn't.

I have had ny DNA tested through Ancestry and I am very pleased with the results. Of course siblings can come out somewhat different. Every child inherits 50% of the DNA from each parent. No sibling inherits the exact DNA as another sibling. Ancestry explains this and more on their website.

Bingo. Logic and science, not smoke and mirrors. If one chooses to dismiss the science, fine - but that is only their truth, not "the" truth.

I also read that your DNA will then go into some kind of records place or file and if

anyone commits a crime with some of the same DNA as you ,you may be contacted by

police for info on family members and yourself!

That would be something if the police came knocking on your door because a dna match on a cousin you never heard of before, committed a crime.

Some have tons of hits on their dna matches.
