Do You Like Working Part-Time?

I have done full-time, overtime, and part-time - I now work about 25 hours/wk. I am fortunate to be able to do this. I enjoy the job. Best of both worlds. (I admit, not working, but knowing I had the job, was the best!).

I have often worked a full time and part time job over the years. Since I retired, I prefer not to work at all. I volunteer at a local school, which I enjoy and I am free all summer.

I find that I am too busy to have a part time job. My DH retired and he works part time a couple of days a week and he really enjoys it. Of course, his PT job pays really well, more than a lot of people make full time. I have never had a PT job that pays well enough for me to love it.

I love part time work. It does not take over your life and you can still do other things. Also it keeps people like me who is not a joiner and motivated on my own to get out, to be around people and feel useful. Also you can quit easier than a full time job with benefits etc. I have only worked part time when I did not depend on it to eat and pay bills. So my part time jobs were my choice to be there not like when I worked full time.

I worked per diem for about 4 years after I retired, I'm DONE !!!!

I did when I did. But I had the luxury of not needing my employer to provide health insurance nor a hefty weekly paycheck. I worked because I enjoyed my co-workers and clients. I retired in order to pursue voluntary endeavors to serve my church and community.

Agree - part time is best of both worlds. Retired from career in education and now work part time at a college. Love it. Meet interesting people and add to savings. Enjoy activities at college during leisure time like music, theatre, non-credit classes. I'll do this until I'm ready to let it go. Fortunate.

Many years ago I was laid-off from a great job and worked 3 part-time jobs to almost make up income. One of the jobs had great benefits even though it was part-time - everythting but health insurance. I paid my own; the cost was reasonable back then.

I currently hold a full-time job that I'm burnt out on and a part-time job that I love. I'd bail on the full-time job but can't now because of the cost of health insurance.

Sometimes working part-time is a choice and far more fullfilling, at least for me.

I retired 3 years ago at 51, I work part time doing something totally different with no stress. I work 3-5 days a week depending on amount of demos. It pays very well and I love getting paid every Friday. This week I'm working 4 days, Monday Tuesday and Friday Saturday. Still gives me a lot of free time to do what I want.

Edit it to add, I work anywhere from 6 - 10 hours a days

Thanks for the answers. I do love the money. And getting out and talking to lots of different people. Keeps my professional skills sharp. Sometimes, though, I wish I were a free bird again. My schedule, though decent, is fairly rigid, and I tend to kick and scream when I'm feeling fenced in.

Gotta get over myself, I guess!

Add: I am very fortunate that part-time hours are all I need in order to make financial commitments. I know that. Some of my co-workers are working 6-7 days/week. I've worked full time most of my adult life; my three day-a-week job is much preferred!

I have worked many part time jobs and many full time jobs. I must admit that I have enjoyed 2 part time jobs and 1 full time job. I think it was the people I worked with that made me want to get up and go to work.

It seemed like we were all on the same team and were working with one another. The best job I ever had was working part time at the Disney Store. I worked with a tremendous group of people. I am still friends and socialize with them today.

I am retiring in a month and CAN NOT WAIT! And I will add I will never see most of the people I now work with on a social basis again.

I was hired parttime for my last job before I retired. After 6 months I was being asked to come in days that I was supposed to be off. As a team player, I said yes most of the time. Then I was asked to be full time..

I did that for several years until I became tired of doing the work for a lazy employee on Facebook all day.

I retired fairly young and it was in my plan to work part-time after retirement. That plan flew out the window after being retired for about a week. Sure, a little extra "fun money" is always nice, but my complete freedom was more important. Luckily, I don't need to be around people. :-)

I worked part-time for about 6 years as the operations director for a small, institutional investment advisory firm as a way to ease in to early retirement. I worked full-time the first half of each quarter and not at all the second half. In theory, it was great, but in reality it became a challenge. Even though clients and/or members of their investment committees were well aware what my schedule and duties were, it didn't stop them from expecting me to be "on call" for whatever they wanted at any time. It became more hassle than it was worth.

I get it, @FrostyBabe1. I am in somewhat the same situation - I am part time, but relied upon, and sometimes "on call", and it seems to defy the whole notion to begin with.

@Nataliesgramma, mine was the opposite. I worked full time for several years, decided to go parttime, trained the young girl that would work for me.. thought everything was all good until she started asking me to fill in for her so she could be off. HUH? I didn't say yes most of the time.. It was only Thursday and Friday's she worked- needless to say that didn't last long- I guess two days were too much for her because she gave notice after about 3-6 months and I went back full time.

I did enjoy being part time but then a few years later I quit working all together.

I would love to work a 4 day work week.! Right now I am fulltime and I have always been fulltime. The only time I worked part time, was when my girls were very young, I worked 20 hours a week. I would love to work a 32 hour work week right now, but sadly don't think it will be possible, at least not in the near future......I think part time is a great Happy Medium!!!!!! You are very lucky!

I'm facing a work dilemma myself. I currently work full time at a stressful job with a long commute. On 4/1/18, I'll be eligible for Medicare insurance so I plan to leave my current job but I would prefer to wait to start my Social Security at least for another year after that, when I reach full retirement age.

Soooooo, I'll have to find a full time or part time job closer to home. I've spent the past couple of years living on a limited budget and becoming debt free. I've read all the posts here and can commiserate with the different situations. I've worked various jobs for the past 40 years and I'm tired!! All my friends & family (not my kids) are all retired and happy.

I do like being around people. I do believe we are put into places for a reason and others cross our path for a reason as well.

I know when I fully retire, I have plenty of things to fill my time. My furbabies, taking care of my home, spending time with kids & grandkids and being around other active retired folks.

My husband had a part time job for 12 years and it ate our lunch on taxes. He has recently quit so I'm looking forward to a tax break!
