They were made and intended for Autistic children. They have just been banned from our school district. I think they stack multiples and play with them.

When my teenage son asked for one, I did a little research on it, & discovered it was invented by a woman as a stress reliever, & used for children with ADHD & autism, but was becoming popular with young & old alike. They're now being sold at the counter in our local convenience store! My son has one (he is a bit high-strung), & enjoys it.

The woman who invented this toy doesn't make a penny from the sales of them. It was on a TV show this past week. She invented them quite a few years ago, but couldn't get anyone really interested in manufacturing them, so she let the patent lapse, when she couldn't afford the $400 to renew it.

Now they've taken off like crazy, but she has no patent so anyone can produce and market them.

It is so sad that the inventor couldn't get it manufactured and didn't have the money to renew her patent. She gets no credit for her invention and no benefits from sales. I know that's business but it must be a bitter pill to swallow.

@SydneyH .. my nieces have two of them. I had never seen or heard of them until this past weekend when I went to visit them.

I have two children that love these things. And,my son is going to a birthday party on Saturday and the birthday boy asked for (another) fidget spinner. All I can say is that I wish I was the person that created them. $$$ching ching!!!

Her story is a very common one. In addition, many individuals who work for the gov't or large corporations receive nothing if something they invent becomes "big"...it belongs to the employer (my DH can tell you a few heartbreaking stories, let me tell ya).

As for the spinners, my 10 year old has 3..they bring them to school and use them to break up the utter boredom of sitting in their chair after testing (which we are doing AGAIN this week in grade school). No issues with them in school or out.

My friend who is the cashier showed me the other day. I still don't really understand what it does besides spin.

The same day, my husband came home from work and said his coworker who is 20 something got screamed at for playing with this instead of working. LOL

I don't get what all the hype is about, but I just looked and they're inexpensive, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I remember when they had those little electronic keychains where you had a virtual "pet" to take care of. You had to feed and water it and whatever else, or your virtual pet would die.

All of the responsibility of having a pet, with none of that unpleasant fun and unconditional love!! How the h*** did that become a thing?? Can you give me more chores to do? I don't have enough tedium in my life. LoL

When my daughter was young, the popular thing seemed to be Pogs. They were basically just colorful cardboard cutouts. I'd joke that we could cup up cereal boxes and she could have hundreds of them for free. She would roll her eyes and tell me that I just didn't get it.

I got flashbacks of telling my own parents that they just didn't get it whenever they asked about something I liked back then. They were, like, SOOO old! It was my turn to waste money on something silly like cardboard circles that my child just HAD to keep collecting. I offically became old because she was right - I didn't understand what was so good about them. I need to ask her if she still has those things.

@mistriTsquirrel Those were all the rage (am I showing my old age by using that term) when she was I believe in 6th grade, she was obsessed with it, I told her to put the thing away and help take care of the Real" animals we had!

Somebody got me one of those things when I was younger. I thought it was a bit silly, but cute. Mine was some off-brand though, so it didn't work right when I tried to use it. Eventually my virtual dog either died or became so frustrated with me that he ran away.

My 8 year old son asked me for this 2 days ago so I ordered him 3 from eBay yesterday. He isn't autistic nor does he have ADHD, but his friends have them and they just think they are toys. I told him he cannot play with them in class, but can at recess with his friends.
