I've taken these quotes straight from their website. So as not to get hung up on the word "grade," for a fee, the GIA will issue a "detailed description of the gemstone such as cutting style, shape, weight, measurement, and color, and includes a photograph of the gemstone." A Colored Stone Identification report from them also, "Identifies and describes a material and lists detectable treatments. For any polished, rough, loose or mounted material."

I wonder why QVC doesn't specify if their rubies are fissure filled. Other shopping channels almost always include this info. It isn't because QVC doesn't sell them. I called Customer Service and they asked me to specify which ruby ring I was talking about so she could check it out for me. . .

Most rubies available at anywhere near an affordable price, and emeralds as well, are treated up the wazoo in one way or another, cracks filled and/or heat treated and a couple of lesser known treatments as well.

I wouldn't consider any rubies or emeralds, or most sapphires sold on QVC, HSN or JTV as valuable, and even the best of them are largely opaque in larger stones. The colors and quality of emeralds on these shows blow me away that anyone would want those pale, inclusion-packed stones.

Anything I would want to wear, ruby-wise, would be close to tens of thousands - so, ain't gonna happen unless I start buying those Lotto tickets.

This is a 1 ct loose stone for $5000; it's the kind of color and clarity I'd want.

While I was googling Ruby treatments, a jewelry/gem auction page discussing treatment said that less than 1% of rubies that make it to marked are untreated in any way. So for all intents and purposes, none of us will probably ever even see one.

Although it is a very common practice, I personally think it is unethical to withhold information that a stone has been filled. It is one thing to heat treat a gem to intensify its color and clarity; however, fissures (cracks) are serious flaws. Glass fillings are not stable and can be jarred loose by exposure to sudden temperature changes, sonic cleanings or by being dropped.

I would like to think that if they are fissure-filled that it would be disclosed. That only seems right.

I have heard that on other channels which, of course, is a huge turn off. Fissure-filled is just because the quality of the stone was so bad that the only way to make it saleable was to do this.

I love good quality rubies and remember back when Evine was ValueVision and they sold THE best quality fine jewelry and loose stones. I have a number of loose Burmese rubies from the Ramseys, as well as some pieces including a pair of 18k gold Burmese ruby stud earrines that are positively stunning.

These days, I guess quality is too expensive for the shopping channel targeted audience and now, even the now-called Evine sells more costume than fine jewelry. Glad I'm not shopping fine jewelry anymore.

The quality of workmanship is far different than the goods coming out of Italy. I would never again buy anything from China in the way of jewelry due to frequent issues with the pave diamond work.
