Economists expect a rebound in both retail sales and monthly inflation.

"For the Fed, the underlying momentum is more important in terms of policy decisions, and that looks to be strong, supported by a tightening labor market, rising incomes and high consumer confidence," said Gregory Daco, head of U.S. macroeconomics at Oxford Economics in New York.

The Commerce Department said retail sales dropped 0.2 percent last month after a 0.3 percent decrease in February, which was the first and biggest decline in nearly a year. Compared to March last year retail sales increased 5.2 percent.

Economists had forecast retail sales slipping 0.1 percent. Excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, retail sales rebounded 0.5 percent last month after falling 0.2 percent in February.

These so-called core retail sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product.

Despite last month's rebound in core retail sales, consumer spending likely braked sharply in the first quarter after growing at a brisk 3.5 percent annualized rate in the final three months of 2016. The apparent slowdown in consumption is partly blamed on the late disbursement of income tax refunds by the government as it sought to combat fraud.

The Atlanta Fed lowered its first-quarter GDP estimate by one-tenth of a percentage point to a 0.5 percent rate, which would be the weakest performance in three years.

Thanks for sharing...

Interesting that for such a supposed tech-savvy and forward moving company they can't seem to field a consistently functional website...

I'd also note that George's continued blaming of 'current events' as the primary reason for the stagnant financials is getting old... actually, it's been old for some time... He needs to come up with a brand new excuse...

Interesting that they're out their 'mining' social media and are apparently not reading these very boards to see what their customers are saying about them and about what they'd like to see more and less of...

And yet again, it appears their publicist has been working overtime... Either that, or it was a slow news day in Philly...

O/T: Speaking of Philadelphia, I ran across C*tholic Mass on TV, celebrated at Christ King Chapel in St. Francis de Sales Seminary. Beautiful. The priest mentioned something about especially to the people in Philadelphia, so I'm guessing that's where it was televised. EDITED: I just web searched. It's in Wisconsin. Wondering why he mentioned Philadelphia. I didn't watch the entire mass, just the last half, btw.

I disagree that all retail is down - brick and mortar is down, but online sales are booming. Car sales are booming. People are spending again. So if the Q's sales are down, it's not as a result of low sales across the board, they are doing something wrong - showing same old items repeatedly, prices have jumped considerably, quality is down, shipping is horrible - generally, they don't listen to their customers.

There are so many places to buy the products that QVC is selling, I think that's why they push easy pay. I'm not a fan, but many like and use it. I'm no marketing expert, but it seems like when you're competing with the big dogs you have to find something that sets you apart, instead of just selling the same thins as everyone else. I for one will go where I can get the best price, why not?

@steviebI definitely do - but I've never used QVC as a clothes source - somewhere under 5% of my wardrobe and the the rest of that wardrobe is brick and mortar. Also, my major jewelry expenses haven't been QVC in very many years - and I quit buying jewelry almost totallyalmost 5 years ago.

Further, I might spend $30 in a year for color cosmetics, so I'm out there, too. My shopping habits are undoubtedly the reason I also watch very little and just show up here.

And now that I know they're following social media closely, I'll be sure to keep reminding them that there are some of us who shop totally differently from those who want new, new, and more new and inexpensive or dressy or what I just no longer want.

I have no idea what the average QVC customer spends but I did see a recent Amazon number and I spend more than that at QVC, so even though I've disciplined my spending, I suspect QVC can't ignore shoppers like me. We're never an "only" when it comes to the big companies.

Actually I used to sit and mindlessly watch QVC and sometimes buy something. Now I come and mindlessly read this board instead, and buy nothing. Better for me - not good for QVC.

If they asked me what the biggest problems are I'ed say, for me anyway, it's the sizing, it used to be they had their own sizing and when you figured out what it was you were golden. Now the clothing venders don't have to comply to their specifications so sizing is all over the place and three quarters of the time when you follow the size charts, that they give you, there wrong. It's a royal pain and also SO exspensive. After a while you just say forget it, I just can't take the chance. They need to go back and follow what was done when they first started, with the clothing line anyway. It needs to be more consistent ! As far as the host go stop with all the foolish fooling around and the "I'm your girl friend routines", they arent and it's not cute - it's just plain silly.

I've been with QVC since 1993 - I have boatloads of merchandise from them. I basically stopped purchasing when I would see program after program with a small handful of vendors.

In my opinion, if you have every color of a pant or top, most know you aren't buying many more. If it's a product I'm not interested in, I'm not buying no matter how many shows they do.

As we get closer and closer to retirement, our priorities have narrowed. We concentrate on how our $$ will go toward relaxing, traveling, grandchildren etc. Those are the things I care about; I could care less if I have the latest purse, outfit, makeup. It has nothing to do with how much $$ we want to spend, but where and how we want to spend it.

For us, worldly affairs and elections have nothing to do with shopping. I think that reason is used for most anything these days, it's much harder to take responsibility - personally or in business.
