How do you feel about no turn around signs for driveway?

Our driveway is often used as a turn-around. Been that way for years. Hubby is a neat-freak with the yard and gets ticked when people turn around in our driveway, as they sometimes drive over the yard, and if it is muddy (which often is here, ots of rain), of course it leaves 'ugly' tire tracks in the yard. So, I can see his point to an extent.

He does not want to do decorative rocks or anything. Thinking about a no turn around sign.

Really it does not bother me that people turn around in the driveway, but if they are leaving tire marks in the grass, that is not cool.

There is a lady who picks her son up after the school bus drops him off and she turns around in our driveway every day. This irks me a bit because there is an intersection roughly 50 yards away where a lot of other kids get dropped off, and several parents wait at the intersection and it is easy to make a loop in the intersection to turn around. Getting this kid dropped off by our house, I do not understand, because she obviously has to drive back to her house (large neighborhood). I do not understand why she can't wait at the intersection with the other parents, but..that is none of my business. But where she parks her vehicle and waits some 15 minutes or so, it is at an awkward spot and makes it a bit difficult for others to turn in and out of the public street. But she sits there, parked, for 15 minutes or so, every day. But that is none of my business, just venting, I guess.

So, I guess in short, yes, now I kind of would like people to stop using our driveway as a turn around. Does that make me terrible..?

What are your thoughts on no turn around signs..? Is it an annoying inconvenience, or is the property owner right in posting one..? I dislike maybe making neighbors annoyed, but.. I am now seeing the hubby's side of it.. and not just the lady with the school bus every day.. that is kind of the proverbial straw, I guess..

Well it's not going to stop anyone and it's not like you can ticket them for not heeding the sign. I wouldn't even bother.

Our neighbor across the street always turns around in our driveway. Doesn't bother us at all.

If people are pulling in and backing out then i doubt the sign would make sense to anyone. I think you should place some kind of landscaping, railroad tie or what my friend did--she placed a couple of large rocks at the end of the driveway. That kept people from hitting the grass. And try not to be annoyed by the lady waiting for her child, the street is public.

@msh8970 I think the people that would probably respect the sign are the ones that don't turn around in the driveway. People like the woman you mentioned, will probably ignore it.

Why don't you set s table and chair by the driveway and put up a toll sign...1.00 per turn or 5 for 4.

Slightly O/T: Our previous house was on a quiet street on which you would not expect many turnarounds.

But about a year after we had moved, a neighbor across the street did use our driveway for that purpose. Unfortunately, he should not have been driving, we later discovered. He mistook the gas pedal for the brake and plowed into our house at the corner where our den and garage met. I say den because we had contemplated using that room for our then-three-year-old but decided against. Good thing, as she was napping in her room at the time.

After that, if we ever saw anyone even thinking about it, we gave them the stinky eye. :-)

Maybe something to block the driveway would be better.

My neighbor at my old house would call me anytime anyone parked in front of my house as if we owned the public street. I'd tell her it was fine and I didn't care if anyone parked there.

@msh8970, I have the same problem you do but in a different way. I am on a deadend street. I am not the last house but I am at the top of a hill. There is a turnaround spot at the deadend. I got it put there so service vehicles (like garbage pick up and snow plows) could safely turnaround to come back up the hill.

Anyway, all winter, when people see a slippery road below, they turn around in one end of my circular driveway.

My problem is that large commercial vehicles are using my driveway to turnaround. They have damaged the pavement. I have already had our municipality repair the damage they did but it is a losing battle. My nice paving job looks like he!!.

For those of you who thinks its no big deal, obviously you don't have to deal with it. Think delivery trucks, oil trucks, garbage trucks, construction trucks, whatever.

I don't have a No Turning sign in my driveway but if I could find one, I would. I couldn't care less whether my neighbors like it or not. In fact, they would probably come and ask where I got it. Most of the homes here have cameras so can document these uses. LM

@msh8970 these people have no right to trespass onto your property. Place orange cones at the foot of the drives. It will save you aggravation and you don't have to confront anyone....they'll get the idea!

@MickD, that is exactly what I do. When I know there is going to be heavy traffic and I don't want that going on, I stick a cone in the middle of the driveway. And yes, it gets the message across. LM

@Lilysmom Yay for you! My next door neighbors put cones out as their house is at a T intersection across a busy street from 2 schools. I used to put out a net in front of our drive (when our son was little...it kept balls and him in the driveway!) ...people have such a sense of entitlement...I could go on and on about people whizzing thru our hood to drop off their kids...our neighborhood has signs posted not to do so. My DH went to the

I'd attempt to put a stop to it. How you do it is up to you.

Trespassing, invasion of privacy, and plainly inconsiderate. You are well within your rights as a property owner.

As to the Mom picking up her child - once in awhile, sure. But every day? That's wear and tear.

@Teddie, none around here at our regular stores. I will check online though. I admit to being lazy about it though. The cones do a better job than the signs. No need to post a sign, just make entry undoable😊. Hard to ignore a large pylon. LM

And actually, with the lady BACKING out of our driveway, is not very smart.

She is in a 'blind spot' by backing out of our driveway (we drive behind out house to our garage, or to turn around, so we do not back into the busy street), and people FLY on this street, there is a curve in the road right by our house, a lot of pine trees in the neighbor next door, so it creates a huge blind spot and we have to be careful pulling out, let alone backing out. This time of day in particualr is busy with school, people getting home from work, etc. So, in a sense, it is not very smart for her to do this.

If she gets hit by another car when backing up, will we be responsible somehow...? In this day and age, not wanting to find out.

Maybe I am being paranoid. *shrug* I do wonder how she would feel if someone used her driveway every day so carelessly..?

This reminds me of a time period when I had neighbors who would partially block my driveway.

There is a small strip of land between our two driveways, and the "parking spot" between the ends of our two driveways is no parking spot (unless you own a Smart Car).

These idiots and their friends/relatives would park in that "space" and leave the back ends of their vehicles sticking out where I could back into them if I decided to leave my house.

One winter day, I was shoveling at the end of my driveway as a car approached. The guy driving angled his car in such a way that I could tell he was trying to park in the "spot." He sat there for a couple minutes, waiting for me to stop shoveling snow and move out of "his way" so that he could back into my driveway partially while maneuvering into the non-space. Eventually a female got out. She said to the guy in the car, "well, I guess you're going to have to park somewhere else." So I guess I inconvenienced him by standing in my own driveway and not letting him block me in. Having to walk the extra ten feet must've been excruciating.
