How heavy is your bag?

The thread asking how many bags you carry got me thinking. How heavy is your bag? I swear when I was in my 20s, fanny pack days, everything I needed fit in there. I carried a walkman, keys and a wallet. I never understood a large bag...fast forward...

Now, I carry a large leather tote bag-

vaccum sealed 21 oz water (this is the heaviest thing in there)

phone

lunch

wallet

it weighs just under 10 pounds - I don't even carry a hair brush or makeup except for hand lotion and a lip balm.

Wallet, keys, cell phone - so whatever that weighs.

I make sure it's a light weight bag when I buy it. Even though I don't carry a lot in it, I don't want to start out with a heavy bag.

I have tried to downsize my bag contents, because it does bother me these days, but I'm hopeless, I just keep adding things.

I'm not one of those "oh, it's so heavy' girls when it comes to bags and I do like leather bags. I do carry a lot but it's not too heavy. I carry a bottle of water but now I carry a chubby 8oz, I have my pouch which is my wallet, my phone, a protein bar, 2 packs of my protein shake mix, a small hand lotion, lipstick, a pack of tissues, my glasses. A light sweater or shawl in the summer.....and that's it, I think. It's a lot but I need all of it if I'm going to be out and about for the day.

I try to keep it light but it still seems somewhat heavy to me. I have an organizer handbag so I don’t need an extra wallet; however, all the little extras add up - comb, mirror, tissues, medication, phone, etc.

I don't know how much it weighs, but enough so that it hurts my shoulder! I try to limit what I take with me, but I swear I need everything in my bag! I don't know how some people are okay with carrying these little tiny bags, I wish I could!

Maybe a couple of pounds.

I have my wallet, sunglasses case, keys and a small cosmetics bag with some miscellaneous items.

I hate dragging around a lot of stuff...

LIGHT as light as possible. Last summer I purged my purses of everything that was heavy - and I went to almost always carrying light weight fabric bags.I do find that when I have a bag that needs me to use a purse organizer it makes the bag much heavier.

I have a niece who carries large sums of money for her job so thus she has to carry a gun. At work the gun is open & exposed in a shoulder holster but when she leaves work it goes into her purse. OMG - it is SO HEAVY. I just know that one day she is going to have neck or shoulder issues.

Very lightweight fabric crossbody(s). ID, cash, lip balm, two tissues, four keys. That's about it. I've known way too many women with severe back/shoulder problems (from years ago), carrying very heavy handbags. Even though docs advised them against carrying heavy handbags, they continued to do so. Oh, well. p.s. Plus, I always leave my phone in my car trunk. 'Life is good'.........

Hi, @Yahooey, My purse weighs a ton. Wallet, keys, cosmetics case, usually a book, regular glasses in case, sunglasses in case, cellphone, checkbook, sandwich (if I am going to work--I make green tea in my office), and sometimes a pair of spare shoes in a shoebag.

Thank goodness for the Kate Spade surprise sales. All my purses have come from there in the last few years.

My last several purses, being fabric vs leather, weigh nothing empty.

With what I carry around, however, it still weighs a lot. Long wallet full of various cards & mucho bits of paper. I try to keep heavy change out of it. Cosmetic bag full of medical necessities, no cosmetics except comb, lip palm & lip color. Sunglass case (not heavy), iPhone (heavy), BG monitor & etc. and sometimes, my camera - which is a bit heavier than the iPhone but it's a point & shoot. And the misc little things everyone carries. When I'm somewhere and have brought the camera it gets verra heaveh.

For decades, I carried a handbag with a shoulder strap to keep my hands free. Then, 12 years ago my shoulder started to hurt. I ended up having shoulder surgery and the therapy that followed. I keep as little as possible in my handbag now: keys, glasses, wallet, phone, card case, mini hand sanitizer. I use a small - medium sized bag and never carry it on my shoulder.

Now that I'm retired, I carry very little in my handbag, and get by with a wristlet or small crossbody bag. My excursions are usually only 2-4 hours, so I have no need to carry a large handbag anymore.

I carry a small styrofoam cooler of assorted snacks in my car in the event my husband has a low blood sugar episode while we are out. Juice boxes, fruit cups, pudding, granola bars, and snack cakes, which at one time were carried in my handbag.

I recently bought one of those water carrier jugs on qvc that keep your water cold for hours and this really helps because I don't have to carry it in with me when I go shopping otherwise that too would be the heaviest thing in my purse. When kept in a hot car the water stays cold. There are times when I have considered getting a shoulder holster for my water jug but then I'd have two things to carry.

@Yahooey. I don't know the exact weight of my bag, but when I put it on the front passenger seat, the light above (on the visor) says to "put on seat belt". I guess heavy enough enough, the car thinks a small person is on board. I do carry a bag that's heavy before it's loaded...either a large Downey hobo or LV shopper/satchel.

Back in the day, I rarely carried a purse. Now I have glasses for reading, meds, wallet w/ Medicare & who to contact info, makeup kit (didn't need anything but gloss back then) but now carry concealer, lipcolor, gloss, sunscreen, tweezers, and lip balm. Then there're Altoids, Kleenex, hand lotion, hair brush, travel size hair spray, sunglasses, protein bars, phone & sometimes IPad. Let's just say, I have to switch shoulders several times a day.
