MAMMOGRAM AND WAITING FOR RESULTS

It sure is nerve wrecking waiting for results from my mammogram. It used to be that you got results right away. Now you have to wait days and pray you don't get a call back. How long does it usually take for your results to come back? Or have you every had a call back that they needed more views and did they call you back quickly?

Think of it this way - the positive ones and the questionable ones get called first - the normal ones get put to the back. I just had to wait 3 weeks for my result - and then it was just a text.

Last one I had I had to wait 3 weeks for a letter to arrive snail mail. It shouldn't take that long in this day and age.

Most of us have been there (where you are)many times. I've had 'masses' removed (as have several friends).

The odds are greatly in your favor. Stop worrying and realize that this won't be the last time you'll have one and have to wait for the results. It will repeat itself over and over.

Think positive, the odds are in your favor. You are lucky you live in a time when we have the ability to get this done and (GOD forbid) you need further information, it's available.

How nerve-wracking! I've never had one but I always thought you just did the test, the resulting film went to the doctor's office down the hall, and then you got to see the doc (as soon as it was your turn), while you're there, for the results.

Just had mine last week and they gave me the results in 20 minutes.

They have a digital reader who does this while you wait.

I wouldn't be very happy with more wait time than that!

@Spinach30, hang in there. They will be in touch promptly if there is an abnormality or any question. I think 2 people screen them these days.

This is a tale from long-ago, before the internet was very active. But existed--probably early 1990s.

I had a mammogram result report, and it was sent by fax _to the local library in my city_.

They called me, a little puzzled. So was I! I don't work there. I do have a library card. ????

Three weeks is way too long. I was complaining my letter took 8 days. They told me I'd get a call in two days if there was something to talk about. I have been called to have a repeat test. I came back clear.

I have never had to wait for my results and am given written results before I leave. From reading the other posts, this appears to be unusual. I would never want to wait weeks for results and cannot imagine the anguish that causes, which in today's world really seems unnecessary to me.

Wish I were made that way. I couldn't do that, just couldn't! I don't worry or think the worse, I just get anxious for an answer, what ever it is!

I've had 2 false positives and gone through the scare of having a second one. Maybe that's why.

I pretty much know my results are normal by the number of digital images taken.

I usually get a phone call within a few hours, then a follow-up letter in a week or two. I make morning appts and they've always called me back the same day.

Usually my results come in the mail in about a week. The one time I had to return for extra views they called me the next day.

I think they are usually read within 24 hours. And, like another poster mentioned, two radiologists review them. Then the reports have to wait to be transcribed. Call backs come within a day or two.

I live in Maryland, which is home to Johns Hopkins. I go to one of their suburban satellite radiology locations. I usually get my results within three days, because they put my report into MyChart when it's complete.

The way I look at it is........ No news is good news.

I've had lots of issues in the past. When something unusual was found, I received a call back within 48 hours. When a cancer was found, I received a call the next day and was asked to come back that same day or the next.

My mammo's for the last couple of years have been normal and I get a notice in the mail about a week later. I had a mammo last Wednesday and haven't heard back, so I'm not too concerned.

Some years ago, I was on a schedule of once every six months and several times I was called back for extra pictures. Each time the drive was about a half hour each way and that second trip was always tense!

I did complain and asked to be scheduled for testing when a radiologist was on duty. That got me a consultation with a radiologist who explained their working hours (way too many) to get everything read and the system they used to determine who needed special timing.

Once she had explained everything, I was just very happy never to be in that group who get read first and called first. Having to wait a while and drive a bit extra just seems like small potatoes compared to so much I've watched friends and family go through.
