Have any of you joined your neighborhood Nextdoor private online network? I got an invitation to one in my neighborhood and am trying to decide if I want to join or not.

If you have joined please give me your pros and cons... if you do not want to join tell me why.

I guess I am worried to have my NAZ information out there even if it is a private online service just for members.

I like the Nexdoor for my neighborhood.

People post about suspicious people/activity to be on the lookout for, missing pets, local people to hire for jobs, etc.

I think this will appeal to Facebook oversharers. It's "private" only until the first breach or hack.

They wouldn't have that lineup of Silicon Valley investors if they didn't plan to seriously monetize your data, IMO. Not going there.

Mostly people post about lost pets, looking for a contractor, suspicious activity, things for sale etc. been on it for awhile now. No problems.

I was just reading my email about what's going on in our neighborhood. I really enjoy it, finding that I learn so much that I otherwise wouldn't have known. Very informative; lost pets, suspicious characters, restaurant recommendations, events, etc.

I thought it might be nice for sharing businesses that do a good job in doing home repair and such as well.

We have been on ours for four years and it is very infromative. People post things like plumbers that they have used and recommend for example. Also things that are happening in the neighborhood like someone seeing coyotes or finding a dog. It is just a good quick way to find out what is going on.

I find Nexdoor.com to be very helpful. While we do have some postings for lost pets, we also have postings for recommended service providers and doctors/professionals, people can ask for recommendations for anything, and our local and state police also post any concerns, guidance, or warnings. People post if they see suspicious activity in the neighborhhoods in our area, schools post activities, and Nextdoor generally keeps you up to date on what is happening in your area.

Vendors have a space to advertise, communities/residents can post their yard sales, and our local parks also advertise activities.

I signed up about 3-4 months ago and only stayed on for a few hours and then cancelled. I felt like it put our home's location a little too "out there" for me to feel comfortable.

I received another invitation to join a few a few weeks ago. I belong to a local Facebook page of 5,000 women in our immediate area. I asked them what they thought of next door and got varied opinions. Some loved it, some thought like I did that it made you a little too public. I decided not to rejoin. My Facebook group of 5,000 women is enough for me.

I initiated Next Door in my neighborhood. It is very informative. People can post asking for help, recommendations, awareness of what is going on around you. We have people post if there is a break in to alert their neighbors. A very good avenue if you have pets that are missing or if you find a pet. Sometimes people get a little "snarky" but that unfortunately seems to be the norm on most sites. I have found it to be an excellent resource in this day and age when most people don't know their neighbors.

My community uses it as we don't have a community web-site: we use it to inform members of anything involving the community such as HOA meetings, Community clean up day, yard sales, etc. It's great for finding contractors, babysitters and things for sale. You do NOT have to include your last name, your address or anything else unless you choose to. You can set the private settings so only those you allow in your neighborhood can see you (if you post) and so you only see postings about your community.

It's also great regarding crime: the county police post to it if there is a situation people need to be aware of. We used postings from neighbors to go after and prosecute 2 teens whose parents were not keeping them under control- the thefts and destruction of property gave the police (and us) a timeline and showed what was happening hours after the damage/break in occurred. We were able to locate lost pets that escaped without the owner knowing. We post about shoddy work done by contractors....we post anything that we believe is important to keep our community nice.

Last, we use it to give out info regarding social issues that many are unaware of since there is no local paper: zoning of new developments/a bar too close to the school (we fought and won); meetings regarding a new traffic light (we wanted one and now it's coming), speed bumps, school zoning, etc. All important info that otherwise we wouldn't know about until after the fact.

It's been great for our community.

Same here. I want personal recommendations from mine and the adjoining neighborhoods for fair, dependable, local businesses and individuals for plumbing, painting, landscaping, mechanics, pet sitters, etc. We also get notices about community events and services such as free paper shredding, entertainment, safety issues, and neighborhood concerns. Very helpful!

I have mixed feelings. Ours has a lot of stuff for sale - almost garage sale like. Books for $2, kids clothes etc. Some informative stuff/town happenings. And one guy who is better off lost than found. He stirs the pot and spouts off. I deleted my account a few years ago and just recently reactivated it. But not sure why. I also left FB 6 months ago and have never been happier.

I've been a member for two years. It wasn't very helpful at first, but slowly more people in my "neighborhood" have joined, and as a result the posts have gotten more relevant.

Recommendations from members helped me find two different handymen (with different skill sets) for small projects. Their workmanship was excellent and they were very affordable. I also like that the site is moderated, unlike Facebook!

@SeaMaiden,We have basically our entire city on it, plus the Police Dept. post all sorts of reports and information on it, which is great! I highly recommend it if it is available in your area!
