Lately I've seen some calls come in from Canada and Guam. Maybe they are spoofed numbers. Anyone else seeing numbers on your caller id from other countries? I wonder what the scam is.

I haven't been getting any country info, but getting some really weird stuff and some super long numbers (like, way longer than any phone number on this planet!).

Nomorobo must be catching those, however, as I haven't been hearing a ring, and I'm home 99% of the time. Thank goodness for that! Keeps me out of the 'anger mode' to not have to even know they are trying to get through.

The spoofing is getting more clever, and obnoxious. I had a call yesterday from a local number, and because it could have been important, I answered. There was a delay, and a fellow with a heavy accent asked something, I asked if I knew him, and then he launched into a rapid spiel that seemed to be about donating to a fund for children.

I said goodbye, hung up, and looked up the number. It was the fax machine of a psychotherapist in town. Pretty unlikely that this came from her, so it made sense that the guy or his firm had simply spoofed my area code and prefix for the ID, increasing the chances I'd answer. Next time, I won't.

Thankful for ID. Too much time and effort wasted on spam calls.
Interesting experience recently from univ alum association seeking annual appeal. The call went to daughter cell instead of our home phone. Foreign accent asking for DH. He was given home number and he pursued with us. I investigated legitimacy since our home has always been called. Officials reported it was official and since someone reported phone out of service the univ got into some data base that gave bill payers name. Talk about ruthless tactics. Not happy alum at this end.

I just recently discovered that our phone company offers Selective Call Acceptance, I plug in the numbers of only the calls I want to receive, and the rest of the calls I hear a small ring and those callers are sent a message that we are unavailable, pretty slick!

We have an unlisted home phone number and use a cell phone when we order from the internet, or doctor appointments etc etc so our home number is not out there, and I am amazed how many times people try to call our home phone?

One day just to see who the calls were coming from I turned the service off, and they were all scam calls, how they get an unlisted number is beyond me?

I subscribe to anonymous caller id from my land line provider. Some still figure out a way to get through. The names and numbers on caller id are not reliable. I have an unlisted phone number and discovered recently that some company I have done business with has shared my phone number with some charities. There is very little privacy anymore. Like most of you, I rarely answer them.

Just make sure you never return the call to find out if it was really for you. Aside from the calls to try to scam you for money donations, many of these numbers actually are very expensive out of country calls that are yet another way for the scammers to make money. ignore any call you don't recognize, especially if no message left!
