Words on the Walls

I was watching a Guide to Homes that are for sale in my area. A video tour of the houses was shown and I noticed a couple had Family, Love, Happiness...written on the walls. Who would do that? I found it odd and rather tacky.

Those so-called inspirational words are the "in" things right now with many people sticking them all over the house. I personally don't care for them but it's their house so they're entitled to do what they wish.

If someone is selling a home I would think they might paint a solid color but I personally have friends who have done this in a room and it looks very nice. I would have to see what was done to comment that it looks bad.

A lot of things seem tacky during house tours. It is probably peel and stick. No worse than bad carpeting or paint colors but cheaper to fix.

I like this look. It is really no different than having a picture on the wall. You can paint over anytime you want.

I have "Just another day in paradise" on the wall in the guest BR. It is just a plastic decal, and will pull right off.

I might use the decal on a wall, but cannot see myself using paint and a stencil to do this. I wouldn't like something permanent on my wall, which is also why I don't like wallpaper.

i have some younger friends who are very into this style. i dont find it tacky or odd. it isnt my style, but i do think it can look quite nice.

It wouldn't appeal to me, but I would like to think that if somebody has put the house up for sale that they would paint over that to give the property more universal appeal. It's just good sense.

I wouldn't put so-called inspirational words on the walls of my house. But maybe this family was just trying to de-personalize their house for marketing purposes. So they replaced the family photos with the word "FAMILY."

I agree with you. It can be a nice touch but not when selling a house since you want it to be more neutral to appeal to buyers.

@Kachina624. When I went to book club last week at a different house, "words" were every where!!! Sayings stenciled on the walls, stitched on pillows, our coffee mugs said things like "Wake Me When Coffee's Ready" or "Caffeine Is My Wine", etc.

I joked with my hostess after the house tour that "I felt like I had already read next month's book" (I have no filter). Not exactly tacky, but overdone at this point and every where I look, something to read is tiring...not relaxing. Would never do it in my home.

Give me some neutral walls, neutral furniture and bright colored framed art work or wall hangings.

They're everywhere. Go to HomeGoods and you'll find huge ones, small ones, cutesy ones, poetic ones....buy them in a group, buy them individually, buy them mounted on a board. Some people stencil them on their wall, some people hire those who will paint them in script on their walls, some buy sticky ones that you smooth on the walls.

I hate them.

How could you have such a strong reaction to such a simple thing, which no one is requiring for you to use in your home? They are simply a trend right now, and will pass as all trends do.

I have one in my house over the front door that says "Home is where your mother is". I like it. Since it's my house, I don't care who doesn't like it.
