Remembering Phone Numbers

Back in the day of rotary dial or even early push button phones one either needed to remember the number or look it up.

Today with phones with memories be they cell or landlines remembering is no longer necessary.

If you were separated from your phone and needed to contact someone without delay using someone else's phone would you know the number to dial?

Yes, I would. There are phone numbers that are commited to memeory.

Not mostly. I know my husband's cell number (well, most of the time), and that's about it. Oh, I also know his office number - I think. Yeah, that's it.

I remember the numbers of DH, DS, DIL, the store where I worked after teaching and had to leave because of a toxic coworker, and lastly my home phone number from when I was age 5!!! That's when they used letters of the alphabet instead of the first three numbers!

I don't know the other numbers in my phone because I don't call them enough.

I have a little black book in my purse. All my numbers are in it and I carry it with me wherever I go. I do not have a cell phone.

I have all frequently called numbers committed to memory. And even though my home phone has many numbers preprogrammed often I still dial them. Just a hard habit for me to break.

My family, my closest friends, etc. I know their numbers and always dial them. I carry a tiny book in my purse with other important numbers (more distant relatives and friends, doctors, dentists, etc.).

I never learned how to load contacts into my phone, and I rather like it that way. Having to remember the numbers has got to do something to help keep the brain functioning.

I only have my brother's phone number memorized, and oddly, the main number to the agency I retired from almost 3 years ago. And I haven't called it since I retired.

Almost everyone I call, I call from my landline. So I remember their numbers (albeit mostly their cell phone numbers).

Of course their numbers are loaded in my cell, but more times than not, when I call them, I dial their numbers instead of going to the text feature and hit the phone icon.

Clearly I have some memorizing to do. I'm going to take the hint from some of the posts and manually start dialing to also build muscle memory.

The only phone number I can dial without hesitation is a dear friend's number. I would stumble trying to verbalize the number but I can dial it without thought.

I know two of my three daughter's phone numbers and one son-in-law's number. The 3rd daughter doesn't usually have her phone with her and/or doesn't answer it. She doesn't live near me so it's fine.

I know the numbers of several of my friends. I don't try to learn everyone's numbers, I'd go crazy.

Very true..lot's of numbers I don't know and never bothered knowing because it was in my phone.

Funny you should ask! Just today I was filling out the form to renew my passport.

On the line requesting emergency contact information, I had to get my iphone to

recall my older son's phone number. Good heavens! I made it a point to memorize

his phone number today! So far so good! But you made a point that is definitely my

problem. (He has had this number for over a year!)

I know all the important numbers. I don't program into the phone or look for them there. I don't always carry a cell phone, anyway. I was tethered to my office with a cell phone 7 says a week til I took early retirement. I do not want to be available to everyone all the time. People are forgetting what freedom feel like because they are chained to their phones every minute.

@Susan in California, although I didn't have an immediate need for a number I saw a piece on local news tonight that made me realize that if I had an emergency and was separated from my phones I don't even know the ICE number because it is in my phone so until tonight wasn't anything I needed to remember. Wrong--in an emergency the phone may not be there.

Nope. Two things I rely on - my cell 'phone book' and my GPS; I have always hated trying to decipher maps. Young or old, I think there is only just so much that can fit in ones memory bank.
