I don't find this at all surprising.

Children are taught early on that the computer can answer ANY QUESTION.

The problem????? Children are rarely taught HOW to formulate the questions. Talk to contemporary kids, and you'll find that this is true.

Question formation evolves within conversation. If many or most linguistic activity occurs via electronic devices, the skill has no reason to develop.

Taking a wild guess, I'd bet that the child who wrote this answer is used to learning from a screen, rather than a human.

My husbands Niece is early thirties. No computers in school when she learned basic history. About 15 years ago subject came up about first President. Her answer? Denzel Washington!

This does not surprise me at all.

Putting a plug in for teachers, however:

I know many who work very hard and go above and beyond what is required (while many do not). Despite this, they have students who still fail, who still deliver work that you shake your head at; something just like the example the OP has posted. The problem? Little to no involvement from their main caregiver/caregivers outside of school.

Then there are the schools that just pass the children along like cattle because....that's what you do.

I want to say something in the child's defense. They didn't get it right ,but I think it shows intelligence

You can tell they are quite young ,and they made a connection ,between what it said on the picture ,and the image that was shown

They weren't taught any different, so ,they made a logical ,reasoned answer.

I don't know how old the child is, first of all. Based on the writing and the misspelling, probably very young.

I don't think it's unusual to copy what the child thinks is the name of the person under the photo. Getty Images is two words just like a first and last name. Most names appear under a photo.

I'd have to know what the actual assignment involved to better understand why the child answered that way.

Many teens and young adults can't tell time using a clock.

Many cannot read or write cursive.

Appears to be a young child so I find it amusing. What I don't find amusing is what the recent college students on Jeopardy didn't know. All were from expensive private institutions and, it seemed to me, the questions were less than challenging.

It would not surprise me if many adults would come up with the same answer.

I remember Jay Leno's segments on the street asking people questions about history and they were just as ignorant.

OMG, yes! ..... it always started out funny but quickly became very sad. I often wondered if people were REALLY that stupid ..... or were they just making up ridiculous answers in hopes of getting on TV.

When I was little, I heard 'Boycott Lettuce' on the nightly news (1970)..and my parents talking about it at the supper table. I thought it was a boy whose name was 'Cott Lettuce'. Man, my older siblings teased me to no end...and yes, 47 yrs later, I still remember.

What I find weird/sad/eye-roll is Getty Images slapping their name on everything...imo.

The child must have been young so they can still learn the correct answer.

I know the young people are not taught much history or even geography where I live in Los Angeles.

Many find the subjects useless (the school system) and they want the children to learn what will make them the most money.

actually this made me laugh. it's written obviously by a very young child and i can see how they could make this mistake. i don't see this as a bad reflection on kids at all.

I would also have the wonder if this young child has a learning disability.

They were clearly copying, yet wrote 'Imeges' and not Images. All they had to do is pure copying - and they couldn't.

History wasn't taught until 3rd or 4th grade when I was a kid in the mid-fifties. I knew Washington was the first President because I was taught it at home in the context of the Feb. holidays for Washington and Lincoln.

The parents have something to do with the knowledge level of their kids, surely. A little kid who would answer "Getty images" is just being a little kid. I had a friend whose child wasn't admitted to a private grade school in NYC because when he was asked where bread comes from (he was 6 or so), he answered "From a bakery."
