tipping trends nowdays...

I just left a post about panera and how they ask up front for a tip. Well, went to get a frozen yogurt today. I walked in, I took my own cup, i filled it with yogurt and walked to the register to pay......i put it on the scale and weighed it, the girl rang it up and on my screen it asked if I would like to leave a tip!!!???/ it even gave me percentage choice's... really ! I checked the "no " box and payed. the girl kept looking at me as i was leaving with a straight face, not very happy. Another place that i will not go to i guess. is this going on everywhere now days ?

I've never heard of someone outright asking for a tip let alone showing tipping categories.

Just a guess, but I think it must be the fault of the owner who doesn't want to pay a decent wage. With that suggested list, I doubt the workers came up with the idea.

It showed on the screen if i would like to leave a tip and gave me percentages, like panera, only showed more percentages boxes.

I don't let little things like that bother me.

Just because they ask for a tip, doesn't mean that I have to give one, or mean that I won't go back.

If I like the food, and price, I will most likely go back, regardless if I pAid the tip or not.

I think it's built into the software or system, like Square. You're free to say no, just like I say no whenever a cashier or system asks me if I want to add a donation to my order.

I'm just not sure I think the consumer should be asked to make up the difference when the owner or whoever doesn't want to pay minimum wage.

I don't eat out that much. There are two restaurants that we love. One is about 45 min away, the other is an hour away. I always leave a good tip at those places. We have never gotten bad service or bad food.

These little fast food places, or yogurt places, having a tip jar just seems like of odd to me.

I did check the no box, but she gave me such a look. I already paid 6.00 for it and served myself, no way was i gonna give her a tip for just standing there and ringing the register. just felt uncomfortable.

I noticed it a few weeks ago at Panera. When the screen pops up, they said just to skip it. I don't feel compelled to tip at Panera. I just assumed it was part of the software package on the pin pad.

Tip jars don't bother me.

I might toss a dollar in.

I'm not going to notice one less dollar in my wallet.

I don't think it's a new trend. I think it's the establishment you went to. Go elsewhere and your problem should resolve itself.

We posted on a similar thread here a few days ago.

I don't like the fact that we are expected to really (if you think about it) pay the salary of the person serving us food.

Like I said before, my friend and I eat out 4 to 5 times a week (restaurants, not fast food). We always leave 20% which adds up when you eat at a place where the meals are usually $15 or more a piece. That's OK, we are used to it and figure that's the price of eating out.

Lately the waiters are talking openly about the $2.15 or so they get an hour. They say they have to also 'tip out' to the person clearing the table.

My friend added it up and say at $35 the tip is around $7 plus the $2.15, that's still only around $9.15 an hour. I know then you have to figure they might have 3 or 4 tables.

I've noticed many restaurants these days hire quite a few waiters, especially the upscale one's.

The waitress the other day at Ruby Tuesday (chain restaurant) said she used to work for Mariott. She said she made a really good salary (flat rate) and prepared the food (put it out) for people to help themselves for breakfast (you know how you go down and get it at the restaurant (I like this arrangement). She said she got health care, etc. She couldn't keep it up because she lived a long way from the place and would have to leave her house around 4:00AM. She was always exhausted and had to give it up.

Like I said, I don't mind tipping but it's gotten to the point where the customer is EXPECTED to pay the salary for the waiter, it's no long a real gratuity, it's payment flat out. Every place we eat at prints out on the receipt what %20 amount is and so on (in case we are stupid, I guess).

She and I know we spend a lot of money eating out but don't mind paying, it's just that we are EXPECTED to pay the full 20%, that's what bothers us. Sometimes the service isn't very good. Most of the time it is.

Here is how I feel about tipping, just imagine if at our job, the boss was able to deduct a % for a mistake, or an eye roll or just because. It's a flawed system, but I figure if I can't tip, I can't afford to eat out. I believe that all people should get a decent wage and benefits, but I don't see that happening.

@QVCkitty1, this depends on where you live too. Though, I do believe that wages for a particular area are not on par with living standards all the time.

Tipping should be optional based on the level of service provided.It's not our responsibility to pay the waiters salary on top of paying top dollar for the meal.I tip based on service.There are times when the service is terrible.When that happens I don't tip.On the other hand when the service is exceptional I tip extra!!

I don't tip in Panera,deli's,ice cream shops etc.!!

Well I just figure there are too many people expecting tips these days.I pay a price for what I want to purchase but then I am expected to pay more to subsidize the wages.If I get a furniture delivery then I pay for the furniture and the delivery but I must tip the delivery person too...geesh I am not that rich that I can hand out extra money to all of these people.The delivery charges are very high so why can't they pay their people?

I know....really wish I could let that kind of stuff bug me so I have an idea why some feel like that....to be more empathetic...but zero, nada, not there. My Starbucks has an online tip function I can use when I drive off..I use that. When I use a cab, they always have a % tip to choose...even the restaurant has a suggested tip %...it's nice to immediately figure it, I like it.

In the summer I stop at roadside produce stands; the prices are higher than they are at the grocery store but to me it's worth it. The produce is fresher and I like to support our local farmers. There is a tip jar next to where one pays.
