What I find odd is that I have seen you put this in categories with ultra processed foods that are extremely unhealthy. That just isn't the case. The main type of fat found in all kinds of olive oil is monounsaturated fatty acids and they are considered a healthy dietary fat. Monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids lower your risk of heart disease by improving related risk factors. For instance, monounsaturated fatty acids have been found to lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.

America has had so many diet plans that aren't healthy, only making Americans fatter and fatter and when it comes right down to it eating a diet that doesn't make any foods off limits or evil is what works. Eating whole foods with fat and carbs and low in processed sugar and shopping the perimeter of the store is what works. You say that low carb and high fat doesn't work but it is the opposite according to studies and data, it is low fat and high carb is what not only made us obese but also not heart healthy @sidsmom. But ANY diet that is extreme and requires that any food be avoided is what is and will continue to be the major problem. Now obviously if someone has health issues that woud require avoidance, I am not talking about that.

I have seen you say time and time again that any fat is unhealthy. That is what I meant when I said some of what you are saying is dangerous and it is dangerous not only because it isn't true but it is also helpful in lowering cholesterol and LDL. Fat is essential for a healthy diet.

I do absolutely agree with you that Americans need to eat more plant based foods and most people in this country don't eat nearly enough and most people eat too much meat. I don't agree that eating ANY meat, fish or fats is wrong because it isn't. If one wants to be a vegetarian, that is absolutely fine and their right but eating meat isn't wrong or dangerous like you claim over and over. One can eat a very healthy diet with plant based foods and also eat fish and meat occasionally. One can also eat a very unhealthy vegetarian diet.

Unless one is extremely overweight and attempting to lose weight quickly for their health, I don't think that eating a low carb diet is healthy either. I have never said that I thought it was. But I also know that in the 90s when the low fat diet really exploded it added to Americas obesity (thanks Susan Powter) in a very substantial way. It was called "The Snackwell Phenomenon". Not only was it adding a ton more sugar to our diets but is was taking away VERY HEALTHY fats/fatty acids that are NEEDED to lower risks for heart attacks. During this campaign for fat free and reduced fat products actual fat consumption did go down but Americans got much fatter during this period. "We now have more than a half century of data as well as increased understanding of how nutrition impacts the body and specifically coronary heart disease," said the study’s co-author James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist at the American Heart Institute, in a press release. "After a thorough analysis of the evidence it seems appropriate to recommend dietary guidelines shift focus away from recommendations to reduce saturated fat and toward recommendations to avoid added sugars.

The research team put its theory to the test and found after just a few weeks of participants consuming a diet high in refined (processed) sugar, those with coronary heart disease began to experience several signs of heart abnormalities, like higher levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (bad cholesterol), and lower levels of HDL (good cholesterol), all of which increase their risk of heart disease. Meanwhile, saturated fats increased levels of LDL, but in doing so also increased levels of HDL, making their negative impact on the heart less dangerous compared to sugar. Ultimately, this led researchers to conclude in their study that "sugar consumption, particularly in the form of refined added sugars, are a greater contributor to CHD than saturated fats."

There is also something called the French Paradox. Despite eating a diet higher in saturated fats they have a lower incidence of coronary heart disease.

When they began studies back in the late 1970s, they expected that they would find a relationship between fat intake and breast cancer, because that was almost an accepted relationship. But as the data started coming in over the years, they did not find any higher risk of breast cancer among women who consume more fat in the diet. And the same was true for colon cancer and for heart attacks and risk of type 2 diabetes. In fact, the percentage of calories from fat in a diet has not been related to any important health outcome.

Many people have selected to decrease the amount of bread they eat.

If this is your choice, what do you eat instead? If you continue to eat bread,

what types of bread products do you eat?

I enjoy eating toast with peanut butter for breakfast. On a semi-regular

basis I replace the bread slice with a flavored rice cake.

Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Sourdough bread is my fave.

100% whole grain organic bread for me and dont plan on eliminating it from my diet. I too like a piece of toast with 100% pure peanut butter (i.e. Nothing but peanuts-no added salt or sugar, etc) or almond butter first thing in the morning. Sometimes with some sliced banana on it too. I used to eat rice cakes on occasion when I was younger but not anymore.

Both are grain based foods, and neither work for me if I want to feel my best on a regular basis.

If I want peanut butter, I eat it on Granny Smith apples or on celery. Both combos are yummy!

I have not totally eliminated bread but have reduced it from my food choices by eating it just once a week and sometimes once every other week and because I so seldom eat it, I am not always looking for organic. For example twice a month I'll buy the French Brioche Hamburger Buns with organic grass fed Buffalo Meat and make hamburgers. Here's the packaging for the buns which have a really good taste and dh loves them too. Are they organic....I have no idea and I don't care.

My other bread choice lately has been the Honey Wheat footlong roll they use at Subway....absolutely not organic which is normally all I eat but again I don't care because twice a month is all I consume and not even every month, I'm always changing up my food choices. I buy the rotisserie Chicken because it is free of antibiotics and hormones. I do not use Subway's veggies and I do not use their dressing. My veggies and dressing are organic and so I dress the sandwich at home. I don't usually buy a loaf of organic bread anymore because it will go bad before it is finished. Neither of us eat it everyday and if we had it in the house, we'd snack on it which we don't want to do.

For breakfast each day I consume a choc protein whey powder mixed with organic greens (a powder), organic whole husk psyllium and organic extra virgin coconut oil mixed with water. It tastes really good and mixes really well.

I eat salads with walnuts and I usually buy mache rosettes from Whole Foods. It's really delicious. I seldom build a salad anymore from their salad bar. I'm over that although it took me a long time to kick the habit. Got skeeved out a few times from kids poking the food and just couldn't do it anymore.

I'm not a vegan (obviously). I eat hardboiled eggs and chicken on occasion as well as bison. Smith's Kroger now sells roasted chickens that are also free of antibiotics and hormones. Both dh and I like eating those. We don't cook much although do cook more in the winter because it's so hot here in the summer we don't feel like heating up our kitchen.

Back in the day, which makes me sound like 90, we just went food shopping, prepared our meal and ate it. Now I go crazy looking up carbs, sugars, fats, & total calories. Is this organic or not & does that really matter? Grain fed or grass fed? If my daughter's visiting, I have to also check labels for gluten free.

It's exhausting especially bringing my magnifyiying glass in my bag to read all this on the packaging. Shopping takes 3 times as long & I dread it.

I'm not the only fact checker, so why is the population more obese than ever before? Type 2 diabetes more prevalent? Heart attack and stroke, high cholesterol & high blood pressure on the rise as well?

Could it be we were better off before we knew all this info? Maybe our bodies can't digest or adapt to all this extra fiber and grains I'm just hearing about.

Processed foods and high sugar salt intake along with meat cheese promotes problems. Really is simple! More you shop outside perimeters of the store better it is for your health and waistline also pocket book.

I'm in the same camp as Violann, but alternatives abound! You can quickly make all kinds of breads and baked goods using almond meal, flax and coconut flour. Cloud bread is easy and delicious....I have no shortage! I love Paleo wraps....

Mary's Gone Crackers are wonderful and so is Crunch Master....

So many things taste great on lettuce wraps, Apple's or other fruit slices-sweet potatoes, jicama....

It's easy to go grain free these days BUT, many commercial alternatives pack a wallop in the carb and calorie departments. In the end, the ingredients used to make them are still fine flours and are easily converted into glucose. That may not be an issue if you are not diabetic or pre-diabetic or carb sensitive.

Poodlepet2

Once every week or two I indulge in a good old Jersey bagel with cream cheese. Other than that, bread is off the table for me. Must keep carbs to a minimum for health, weight loss and blood sugar control.

For sure @Poodlepet2, once you actually have to watch your intake of carbs, sugars, etc., the hunt for "good for you" food and imaginative alternatives takes over the shopping list. I've learned to shop the right side of the store (veggies), along the back, chicken, fish and meats, and then along the far left for yogurt, milk, cheese, etc. If I stay out of the middle aisles where all the pre-prepared and junk food live, I'm much off.

😘

Shanus

I can live w/o sweets, but take away my bread and pasta and I get mean. Once a week, I allow myself a semi-cheat day. Either 1/2 a whole wheat bagel (ever read the carbs for an entire one?), whole wheat pasta w/ sauce or popcorn at the movies. Once you begin denying yourself the foods you love forever, the diet is doomed.

I'm not a huge bread lover/eater. However, there are certain things I will eat that call for bread or a bun....bacon & eggs w/ toast, a hamburger, sloppy joes, etc. I normally buy some sort of whole wheat or whole grain loaf of bread and package of buns.

If I'm at a restaurant, I will order some kind of a wrap over a sandwich. If the restaurant offers bread with your entree, I don't eat it. At large family dinnrs, I never eat the rolls. I've just never been overly fond of bread.

Walk away. It's a processed item. Health is not 'processed'.

Why is the population more obese than ever before?

It's the "AND".

Salt....and.

Fat....and.

Sugar...and.

If one would eat these things in singular form, rarely would there be an issue.

It's not the sugar. I could sit down & eat 3T of pure table sugar & the body will process it for energy. No problems. But we don't eat sugar like that. We add the 'AND'. Sugar AND salt. Sugar AND fat...to make them palatable. All this is the same for salt. 'Salt is bad for HBP'. It's r-e-a-l-l-y not the salt but the 'AND'. Salt AND fat. Meat/egg products? Have to 'AND' salt & fat to make them edible. Cheese? High levels of salt & sugar to the fat to make them edible. Salt-fat-sugar is HIGHLY addictive. It takes a couple weeks to remove them from your diet, but once your palette is 'clean', just a sprinkle of salt/sugar is desired.

Fat is definitely is foundation of bad health. If one has health issues, even plant-based fats should be avoided. Fat clogs up our inside workings. Inflammation, insulin resistance, cholesterol issues....all stems from fat. I wish we could turn ourselves inside out...and really see what fat does to the body. Millions & millions of doctors & nutritionist/dietitians would immediately go out of business when seeing what that meat dish or 'healthy fat' product does to our blood stream. Ooof. Not good.
