Have you or your family members ever worked in a prison?

My godson works at a federal prison. The things he tells me that prisoners get makes me scream.

My daughter works with prisoners in a maximum security prison teaching them skills they need to use once they are paroled. I worry about her safety, but she assures me there are officers present to keep her safe....but I'm her mom...I still worry....but she loves her job...and feels like she makes a difference in their lives...I love her.

Yes, I retired from the department of Corrections, nurse. DH is a CO.

When I was little, I was scared of going to prison! LOL! I guess I saw prison movies or something..........???

Then again, I was also scared of quicksand...

Both spouse & I worked in the correction system. He did 25 as lt. & 10 yrs administrator years - I did 25 inside.

Glad we were "paroled" ....it's a nightmare now! It has become a role reversal the inmates are in charge & the co's have their hands tied.

My son works in corrections also.

Those shows are scripted & show the worse of the worse. Although, those from NJ will remember Ambrose Harris (dirtbag scum) and then he killed Mudman - now that was scary for all!

@homedecor1. Did you meet husband in prison, I did. I was not scared for my self but hated to hear radio calls and worried about him. Those tv shows are not an accurate picture. I did get uncomfortable going in to bowels of food service department.

Wow this opened my eyes. You have to be a special person to do this job day in & day out also risking your life. I would like to thank each & everyone of you for this service. Another hero job that goes unnoticed, we sometimes forget about the jail system.

My SIL was a CO, got out of it and so glad he did.

I was 19 years old (newly married) to my Correction Officer husband.

He and my brother in law helped me get an interview at a maximum security prison. I did get the job in the inmate Counseling Dept. next to the visiting room.

I lasted about two years. I was the secretary to the Director of Counseling and all the psychiatrists and the counselors. My female boss later became the warden at a Women's Prison. The co-workers were just great, I didn't really enjoy meeting the Boston Strangler though.

My husband at the time worked at a mimimum security prison down the hill. He later became a Deputy.

I serve a lot of customers that work at a nearby prison, some of our chats have been really eye opening.

My b-i-l was a Corrections Officer on Rikers Island.

He got out as soon as he was eligible for his pension.

My best friend was working for a vending company that supplied one of the local prisons. She didn't actually work for the prison, but was inside for 8 hours every day, filling machines and keeping the visiting area stocked and cleaned. She said it was really sad to see so many kids coming in to visit their parents, and many heartbroken mom's their to see their sons.

Our next door neighbor worked as a CO at this same prison, and he retired and got out the minute he was eligible (and he is relatively young, I'm 55, and he is considerably younger than me). He absolutely couldn't take it anymore. Some of it was the inmates, and some of it was his fellow officers.

I don't think the job pays enough for me to ever consider it in this day and age.

I too have watched the Lock Up shows and it's given me a new respect for corrections officers and anyone else working in the jail/prison system.

My brother and sister-in-law are/have both worked as corrections officers. I worry about my s-i-l every time she goes to work.

My cousin was a guard at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary for many years, matter of fact he was in the original Big House documentary.
