Should Resumes include a Mailing Address?

I was really cautious in my last job search.

I got a prepaid cell at WM and I used that number for job search only. When it rang, it was someone about a job.

I also got a UPS mailbox at the UPS Store and used that as a mailing address.

Sometimes a current employer doesn't want you looking for a new position.

I think this is subjective. There are no hard/fast rules for doing so.

Contact Information

Contact information should be placed on top of your resume. It should be easy and quick to read.

Name and address
E-mail address. Avoid using unprofessional e-mail address such as banana_buns or hottie4u.
Phone numbers. Remember to check your outgoing voice mail message for loud background music, slang, or improper language.
Include the address for your website or online portfolio.

Objective Statement

An objective statement clearly states the purpose of your resume. Not every resume has this. Use it to let an employer know your specific job or career goal. Tailor your objective to the type of job to which you're applying. If you decide not to include it in your resume, be sure to state an objective in your cover letter.

Example: "To obtain a challenging position as an administrative assistant in the financial services industry."

Summary Statement

A summary statement grabs the employer's attention by highlighting your qualifications. It is used in place of an objective statement. An employer may not read your entire resume. A summary will give them a snapshot of your work experiences, achievements, and skills. To be effective, it should be very brief (4-5 lines of text). It should also be written for the position you are applying for. Use keywords and resume verbs when creating your summary statement.

Example: "Resourceful planner/coordinator with extensive knowledge of inventory control and online inventory systems. Recognized by management for innovation and initiative in implementing JIT techniques as well as interdepartmental communications and supervisory skills."

Employment History

You can present your work experience in a variety of ways. The most straightforward way is the chronological format. List your current or most recent job, and work backwards in time. Include your job title, your employer's name, the city and state in which it is located. Also list the start and end dates (month and year) of your employment. For each position, add a summary of your responsibilities and accomplishments.

Where I worked most of my career the cover letters were more of a nuisance than a help and would get detached from the resume. At a minimum, a telephone number should be included on the resume.

I used to as well until the age of online career centers. I changed that practice.

I don't even put my social security # on any application (employment) or otherwise. I stopped doing that too.

If you’re not relocating, do you need your address on your resume?

Technically, no. It’s not like anyone ever sends written correspondence by mail anymore so there is no actual need for someone to have your full address sitting on your resume.

That being said, recruiters do want to know where you are and they often want to make sure you’re local. That means you’ll be able to make it into the office for in-person interviews and that they won’t have to pay to relocate you if you get an offer.

If you’re not relocating, you should be indicating your location on your resume header in some way, even if it’s not a complete address. Two examples are below.

As you can see you can either put your full address or you can just put your city and state. As a local candidate, I do recommend one of these options.

I did. I was not a recruiter but in a position of hiring & firing. The cover letters were always attached (stapled) to the resumes by the time HR got them to me.

@JBKO, there's no way of knowing this for every employer. However, it's customary to include one with a resume. That much has not gone out of style. It serves as an introduction and why you're interested in the company.

No home address - email + phone number.
No objective on resume - I put down my profile. No cover letter since most jobs are online. Since online resumes sometimes get wonky when printed. They may contact you do you can send a word doc directly to them.

People who want to move to an area will use a friend's address or family member's address to make it look like they live near the job so that they will be considered. Or they will just not include an address at all.

I doubt our recruiters read the cover letters. They get uploaded to a separate file than the resume. When I look in our database to look at a resume, I don't even see a place to read the cover letter.

Since I'm job hunting, I'll add my two cents. Street addy is no longer included, but youcan leave city and state. Phone number and email addy and LinkedIn link are used.

@JBKO,It's still considered professional to introduce yourself through a cover letter. It's up to the company to read them.

I'll add that most job hunting sites like Indeed ask for the cover letter.

Not always @SydneyH. Believe it or not, some companies don't have those online application systems, especially if they are smaller companies.
