Emmy-winning actor Bill Paxton died due to complications from surgery, PEOPLE confirms.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” a family representative said in a statement. “A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker.

Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

The Texas native, who won an Emmy for his work in the TV mini-series Hatfields and McCoys, began acting in the 1970s. His earliest acting credits include minor roles in blockbusters such as Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986).

Paxton’s notable performances include playing Morgan Earp in Tombstone (1993), Fred Haise in Apollo 13 (1995), the lead role in the 1996 hit Twister and as treasure hunter Brock Lovett in Titanic (1997).

His television credits include a lead role in HBO’s Big Love as well as Hatfields and McCoys.

Paxton’s son was recently tapped to join the actor in his new CBS drama.

“I was thrilled to have my son [James, 22,] guest-star on the eighth episode of Training Day,” Paxton said.

Paxton was starring with Justin Cornwell in the new CBS cop drama Training Day, which picks up 15 years after the 2001 Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke film of the same name.

The actor had two children and was married to his second wife.

Unfortunately, there are risks with surgery. I know someone personally who passed away after back surgery and she was about 60.

My bet is it was infection from the surgery and not the medical issue he had. ORs are dangerous places, bacteria gets into the various tubing they use and cause MRSA and other types of infection.

This is so very sad! He is only a couple of years younger than me. I loved him in " Twister" movie too. I hope 2017 isn't a repeat of 2016 with all these passings of artist, but when the Lord is ready to take you home, it is with love! Does anyone know what surgery he had?

I've watched Twister every time it's been on. I bet it was an infection too. That's such a shame! I feel bad for his family, and may he rest in peace.

I was wondering the same thing- very sad news. Terrific actor....and way too young!

I really liked him and am very sorry to read this. I was a great fan of Big Love but I liked him in everything he was ever in that I saw. What a shame that he passed so young.

@LilacTree Yes! Infections are always a risk. I have two sisters who are RN's and 2 nieces who are RN's. They have always said one of the most dangerous places to be are in hospitals. If you have to be there, get in and get out as quickly as possible.

I'm about to have knee replacement, I have something called IGG (very low immunity). My Drs are adamant that I not go to rehab afterward but get my fanny home. They say my dirt is my dirt and my body is used to my dirt. Ha!

I just saw him a lot these past few days. It seems like he'd been around making appearances (I know things are filmed). His voice and face is so familiar to most of us. He always seemed more like the guy next door whom you'd like to know rather than some 'fancy' Hollywood personality.

So many of his movies are among my favorites. I also was fond of him in "Twister".

Two years ago my Ex husband passed away 60 unexpectedly. I was shocked needless to say. Truth is, When GOD calls me home won't be on my time table. Husband practicing skating here Lake Placid. Twenty something? Died instantly-while skating. Remember his Wife saying make sure to say I love you every day, You never know. Death is Life. Yes, We miss our loved ones. My condolences to his family and friends. Great Man! Leaves behind legacy of Love. Spread your wings-🌷
