Medi-Share Insurance

I believe this is the Christian sharing insurance...where your medical bills are shared with other insured people in the plan. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad with this type of 'insurance'.

It is not a qualified health plan so you will still be penalized when you file taxes.

Maybe it depends on the state, I know in Florida, I was told by clients who used it last year they were penalized.

Yes, I read this also. They will not be checking tax forms so you cannot be fined.

Interesting that you brought this up. A friend of mine posted about these last week on Facebook. I'd never heard of them so I did a little googling.

I could be wrong, but it was my impression that it's not a guarantee that a claim will be paid. You submit it and then wait. They gave an example of a woman who submitted a claim and then waited four months I think before she found out it would be paid.

And, again, I think I'm remembering this correctly, you had to pay for all routine stuff out of pocket. I don't know what qualified as routine and what didn't.

Just on the brief reading I did, that's WAY too risky for me. One illness could financially ruin you if the members decided not to pay it.

And since its its kind of like a co-op kind of thing, how do you control your portion? At least with my monthly premium it's a fixed amount and I know what it is.

If I'm wrong about any of this, I apologize. I read very briefly, didn't like what I read and stopped researching. Way too risky for me.

I have posted several times about the cost of my health care...I am well aware that I am not alone in these huge costs....our health care costs for insurance and a drug plan is roughly $11,000.00 this year.....dh is on medicare, I am on a tradational plan.

I am signing up for social security earlier than I wanted to just to help off set the costs...the whole thing makes me angry.

our cpa asked for our healthcare insurance form provided by our insurance company. he will be filing it with our taxes.

@gidgetgh...you interpreted the plan like I did..it does seem risky but I am very healthy. I am positive that my husband would not like the idea of this insurance, but I was interested in what others thought.

@Mom2Dogs- I'm saying this to be nice. It's the exact same thing I told a co-worker years ago when, during open enrollment, she briefly considered dropping her health insurance for the next year to save money. She also said she was "very healthy".

You're very healthy today.

I was very healthy also and then, in the course of one minute on December 10th, 1993, I wasn't. The course of my health abruptly took a turn, out of the blue, on a dime. 22 doctors, countless tests, 3 trips to the ER, 2 1/2 years to find a diagnosis. Thousands and thousands of dollars.

not trying to invalidate your experience-it mirrors my present state of affairs. My SIL has a 10K deductable and pays 16K+ a year for insurance coverage.

Why not get a job to offset the costs? Your healthcare costs sound quite high, particularly since your husband is on Medicare.
