Incessive Dog Barking....

I have a neighbor that I don't get along with--haven't spoken to in years. He now has a dog that barks for hours. I can't take it anymore. How long do I have to listen to this dog barking before it warrants a call to my local police. Please don't tell me to call the owner first--he's a jerk.

I feel for you, I really do. Our neighbors have two dogs that bark, and bark, and bark ~ probably 15 feet from our window. I love dogs ~ have three of my own but sometimes, yes, it can be grating. I am fortunate that we have a good relationship with our neighbors so when it gets really bad either my husband or I walks over there and they will then bring them in. To answer your question, every town has their own codes as far as excessive noise is concerned. In our town it is no more than 10 mintues at any time of the day or night. (I know this because I wanted to know for our own dogs ~ they have amind of their own when they see a squirrel, lol)! I would call your local police dept (non-emergency) and ask them about the noise ordinance. They should be able to help you out. Be careful, though ~ if he's a jerk and finds out you called the police it could become even more unpleasant. Best of luck to you!

You need to bone up on your community's animal ordinance. It varies from place to place. Ours will send an officer out to park near the house and time the barking. They take into consideration whether there's any stimuli like the garbage truck. If not they're only allowed something like 5 minutes of continuous barking.

Often new dogs are not atuned to the noises of the neighborhood and bark at every little sound. They tend to improve as they figure out whether or not the noises are worth the effort.

Call your animal control and ask about the rules where you are.

Thanks Kachina....I have been listening to this dog bark for over an hour...and it's a nightly occurrence.

I remember reading a post of neighbors that blew a dog whistle that hurt their dogs ears when it barked even once. I haven't tried that myself.

I have seen devices that will keep a pet away (such as a dog near your window, or keep a cat off your car if it's facing your driveway) that works twenty something feet.

I hope you find something that helps, I've had bad neighbors before & not fun.

Hi @nana59,

Try calling your alderman first. Many live in the same neighborhood that they serve. Your Alderman may have other complaints about the same dog. Push your Alderman to act. He/she can file a complaint with the police about the nuisance noise without getting your name involved.

P. S. make a recording.

I had a neighbor across the street who put his barking dog outside for the full duration of every football game and baseball game that he watched. Standing in my own kitchen I could count the barks, which were several hundred per hour, and got worse the longer the dog was outside.

Nobody is going to believe anybody's dog barks a thousand times while you're trying to watch a movie unless you can offer to let them listen to what you have to hear.

Call the cops and they will cite him. After a while they will fine him. The barking is a public nuisance. I dealt with it in CA. I also complained to the landlord. He finally was evicted after he was fined.

@nana59 I had htis issue years ago, and when calling the owner didn't work, I called the sheriff, several times. Finally they moved, but before they moved, one Sunday morning, I heard a man's voice yelling profanities and telling the man to keep his you know what dog quiet. The barking ceased after this visit.

The idiot owner of the home told me they weren't his dogs, they were his daughter's who lived with hiim. I told him that they lived on his property, so he was responsible for keeping them from being a nuisance to neighbors. I wouldn't let my dogs bark incessantly.

Those devices work for about 5 minutes then the dog figures he can drown them out... and he does. Isn't it funny how the owner are never bothered by or even seem to hear incessant barking? During the few instances when my dogs bark, they drive me nuts.

BUy a small tape recorder. WHen the dogs start barking note the time and date on the machine. KEep it running the entire time the barking continues. When it stops note the time on the machine. YOu might need to do this several times then bring the tapes to the government entity that oversees this sort of complaint.

I don't think anyone could take continuous dog barking. if the neighbor is unpleasant then calling the police sounds like the right thing to do. You would think the neighbor would hate the sound of the barking unless he is not home.

I would call your city or township for ordinance rules regarding excessive barking.

Find out what the laws are and then i would call the police. I would not put up with that for a minute. Your neighbor does sound like a jerk who is inconsiderate. He also does not sound like a good dog owner.

Unfortunately, pet owners who are this inconsiderate of their neighbors often blame and abuse the animal after getting a visit from law enforcement.

That's another reason I thought a friendly visit from a diplomatic neighbor who's also an elected alderman would be a good place to start.

At your suggestion, maybe alderman can team up with trainer or behavior specialist from humane society to help neighbor address his dog's barking behavior.

I'm so sorry for the dog, dogs don't bark for no reason.

I would approach your neighbor, you said you haven't talked to him in years, maybe something is changed and I would address it with him first.

Tell him you are concerned about the needs of the dog and maybe you can come to some type of resolution.

Poor baby, I feel for the dog.

@nana59, my son had the same problem. It was an extreme battle with authorities involved, HOA, petitions, and they were not successful.

This went on for a "year," and my son sold their home and moved about two miles away.

how about the other neighbors? have you talked to them and have they complained? if it is a neighborhood complaint then there definitely is strength in numbers.

That is really annoying.Maybe you can talk to the neighbor in a kind way and get him to bring his dogs into the house when they bark.I wonder if you let him know that it is really distressing that he could understand and comply.I don't know how he couldn't be bothered by it.

Many owners park their dogs outside while they are at work and those who are at home during the day have to listen to it all day, every day.

This is a situation behind my house right now. 2 yappy yorkies on a deck from sunrise to sunset M-F while the owners are at work. Neighbors have called the police but in OUR area, if the dog has shelter and water, there is nothing the police can do. The owners have little pee-pee pads out for the dogs to use during the day and on weekends and evenings, the dogs are inside with the owners.

A typical case of out of sight, out of mind. Many dog owners don't give a ****** about the barking as they don't have to hear it. Often, when confronted, they say "dogs bark. Get over it".

Good luck and hope your county isn't like mine when it comes to barking dogs.

Yes, they are attracted to go out and bark (for about 5 minutes) at certain times....at 3:30 when the kids get off the school bus and come to the fence and pet them, at 8:30AM when working people walk their dogs past our house before leaving for work & the same at 5-5:30 when the people return home.

Dogs bark. That's what they do. We owners get just as frustrated as neighbors. It's important they know that. We have tried contraptions that hang from the trees and our dogs wear a collar that "zap" them when they bark. They learned where the signals didn't reach & ran under & around the beam.

For the dog owners, our choices are limited: crate them whenever we leave the house (often too long to be reasonable solution), give away our fur babies (not an option), or stay home 24/7 and dogsit/police them so they go out, do their business & come immediately back inside.

We have had incidences in our city where neighbors got so frustrated that they slipped hotdogs w/ rotten food or some meds that'd make the dogs very sick or kill them. This is a very sad way to solve the problem.

when i have had this happen over the years and different neighborshoods I have lived in. I just call the police when i have had enough.

I am sorry, but when that dog is distrubing my peace and quiet that is enough.

I call police and begin complaints. If police tell me to call another authority, I do.
