More Storms Lined Up In California

We're having a heavy one here today and more coming in for solid storms from now through Wednesday.

The news said southern CA will also be getting a storm today.

DAM UPDATE:

They've managed to drain a lot of the water in the Oroville Dam and several other dams and reservoirs which threatened to overspill. They're working on a patch for Oroville now. They've done an incredible job with this, I must say, working round the clock.

Hi Noel

We have some rain here in L.A. but the wind is blowing the clouds away. Nothing as tremedous as the news reports. Maybe a little later today but with the winds, there may not be much rainfall.

As for the dam in Oroville, they are releasing MORE water than what is forcasted to come IN, so that helps a lot.

The Sacramento River is up higher that I have ever seen it, and Clearlake is pretty much at maximum capacity.

They've released much more water in the Oroville Dam in order to lower the water below the spillway hole, so that they can hopefully patch it soon. They're already working on it.

Hope the Oroville Dam keeps holding up.

It's been snowing here since at least 8:30 this morning, so I've been enjoying that since it's been in the 50s and higher lately. But it's pretty wet snow, as it's only barely freezing, so no major accumulation. Really glad for up in the mountains for all the many feet of snow they've been getting this winter.

Hope nobody at the lower elevations in N. CA has flooding again!!

I live in a tiny beach town in the Southbay in SoCal, and we are getting a total drenching with quite a windstorm. It's supposed to intensify even more this afternoon. They predicted four inches in downtown Los Angeles.

I would be more impressed with their efforts if they had heeded the environmental groups' warnings years ago - and had not succeeded in persuading the Feds that there was no problem.

OT...but it's about the weather here in Colorado. I'm sitting here looking at my thermometer. It's reading 65! Last I checked this is still winter...strange weather. I miss the snow and I feel like I've been cheated out of my Colorado winter.

More than a decade ago, federal and state officials and some of California’s largest water agencies rejected concerns that the massive earthen spillway at Oroville Dam — at risk of collapse Sunday night and prompting the evacuation of 185,000 people — could erode during heavy winter rains and cause a catastrophe.

Three environmental groups — the Friends of the River, the Sierra Club and the South Yuba Citizens League — filed a motion with the federal government on Oct. 17, 2005, as part of Oroville Dam’s relicensing process, urging federal officials to require that the dam’s emergency spillway be armored with concrete, rather than remain as an earthen hillside.

FERC rejected that request, however, after the state Department of Water Resources, and the water agencies that would likely have had to pay the bill for the upgrades, said they were unnecessary. Those agencies included the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which provides water to 19 million people in Los Angeles, San Diego and other areas, along with the State Water Contractors, an association of 27 agencies that buy water from the state of California through the State Water Project. The association includes the Metropolitan Water District, Kern County Water Agency, the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the Alameda County Water District.

Anyhoo, it has definitely intensified. Our power is going in and out. Quite the deluge and soon to be the late afternoon/early evening commute, full of people who don't know how to drive in bad weather.

I have been really keeping an eye on this. Man no rain for years and then this. I have a good friend who lives in Chico and she has kept us all updated on her situation. Her husband is an engineer now working for a solution to this.
