What to do with Hummels?

It is beyond painful to ask this question but I have tried to ensure that my mom's beloved Hummel collection goes to a good home with no positive results. As time is ticking I am planning on donating her collection to a charity. I always assumed they would find a good and happy home so this is hard for me.

I guess my question is, how does one value a large collection? The majority of her figurines come from Germany and are many decades old but I cannot find anyone that would appreciate them. If you know someone that would be interested in having them I would love to hear from you!

Any assistance will be gratefully appreciated!

Since yours are so old, they probably have some value. Try Google and search for Hummel Appraisers in your state. Also, you might call some collectible dealers and ask them how to get an appraisal for your Hummels.

I've heard that the do sell pretty well on ebay, as there are still collectors out there. Although it's a hassle to list them all separately. Have you tried that route?

Also thinking aloud, would a local personal care home take the collection to display? They may bring smiles to residents who live there. You are such a wonderful daughter to want to find just the right place for your mom's cherished collection.

I have my Grandmother's Hummels - from before WW11. It does make me sad to see the low prices they sell for on e bay. I wish I could buy them from you. How many do you have? Some are still pretty valuable. There is a Hummel store in North Lima, Ohio that may be able to help you to value them accurately.

According to Kovels they are almost worthless. A lot of things are like that now.

If you know of a church that has white elephant sales, or a Santa booth at Christmas ,for children to buy things for their families, they might take them

You can also have them appraised (for a fee should you want to know the value; sounds like some may be worth a lot) and then send them to an auction house.

@Plaid Pants2 thank you so much for this but the antique stores I have contacted in the area have not been very receptive . . . and meow alert for me their idea of antique is the 60's so these figurines are not of interest to them . . . grrrrrr.

I had probably 12-15 Hummels. About two years ago I put all but three of them in their original boxes and off they went to Goodwill.

Of the remaining three, I put one on our hutch and two are still in our curio cabinet.....where I never look at them.

I have quite a few ,we bought in the 1970's when my husband was in the air force,made in germany, i boxed them up when i moved almost 4 yrs ago, i have been thinking of putting them out,but they are not worth any money what a shame because they are lovely.

@AuntMame I have no clue in terms of ebay . . . I do appreciate this input and I will try and find someone that could maybe help me with this . . . thank you!

I have four daughters. Sadly they want NOTHING. I have Hummels, china, crystal, silver, paintings... I could go on and on. No one wants anything. And honestly it looks like the Hummels do not bring anything worth spending the time to list. Of course Hope I Am Wrong.

Thanks for this @chrystaltree as I have tried this but as I am a fanatic of Flea Market Flip I think because of where I live (in the midwest) I have been struggling to find dealers/interest in my mom's collection.

Sigh.

I have Hummels and Lladros (as well as Belleek, Waterford, silver and china) A lot of money was poured into my collections but now they are worth pennies on the dollar.

Our granddaughters have favorites and I've promised when they are old enough, they are theirs. (who knows if they'll still want them)

I just want to say a more than I can say heartfelt thank you for all your input. I guess after growing up in a Hummel household it is tough to round that corner . . . but please know for those that still cherish this collection I will be holding on to one of my mom's favorities . . . again, sincere thanks for all your input! . . .

Box them up and put them in the cellar. It's better than selling them for nothing since they were your mother's. Maybe you'll come across someone who would like them sometime in the future.

Can you post a picture of them? It seems a shame to just give them away. Perhaps a church thrift store. Maybe a consignment store - then you may make a few dollars from them.

My Grandmother told me that when she bought them - during the depression - they were not very expensive but after WW11 they rose quickly in value. Now they have waned again but , who knows what may happen in the future.
