Anyone Getting Tired of Mopping the Mud Room Floor?

One thing I dislike about winter is all the stuff we track in on our boots...even though we try to wipe our boots off on a mat in the garage. When we walk into the mudroom, there is still snow on our boots, dirt, and especially all that salt! The mudroom floor is always a mess and gets a white film on it due to the salt. I mop it at least once a day..sometimes more. I just use the Swiffer in that area because it is so convenient.

I can't really ask my 92 year old mother to take her boots off in the garage as that is so inconvenient and risky. Even if I put a bench in the garage, it is still very cold as our garage is not heated. DH sometimes takes off his boots in the garage if the boots are really bad. He tries to leave a pair of slippers out there. We even have a broom by the door in the garage to try to sweep off our boots.

How do you handle this problem?

We have a large rug just inside the door. We take our shoes off there. No mud no dirt.

We have had very little winter so far in S. WI but we have a boot tray as soon as we get inside the front door. It works wonders for me & my DH, but your mom would need a chair. We are amazed at the crud that it collects. We also have a rug near by.

What about one of those boot pans? I don't know what they're called specifically. You out your boots in it, and all the wet snow collects in the "pan" and not on the floor. I have one in the garage.

I can hear how upset you are over this. I don't have an answer for you, maybe it's something you just have to deal with. I have pets and every time they go out and come back in the track mud or snow in also. It's just Something you have to deal with this time of year.

The large rug sounds like a good idea...maybe an indoor/outdoor type. I would have to put a bench or something to sit on there for my mother.Thanks for the suggestion!

we dont have a mudroom.

when entering from the back of the house or from the garage we enter right into the kitchen area. we wipe our shoes or boots on mats and then take them off. this guarantees no mud being tracked into the house.

OK so it's cold in the garage but really how long does,it take to sit down and remove boots and slide into a pair of slippers? Maybe two minutes? Put a bench out there and a basket with slippers in it and change in the garage.

My solution is a pathway of microfiber runners. I have dogs, husband and family that never seem to wipe their feet. These microfiber runners are my answer. I just toss them in the washer and dryer and they are good for another round. They really absorb the wet better than I expected.

@twinny70 ... We have one of those boot pans also, but you still need to take a few steps to get to it...and mud, snow, and salt shake off onto the floor. Maybe I need to move it closer to the door, but everyone still needs to take a few steps to close the door immediately since the garage is so cold. That's why I don't have it right inside the door.

Lucky that you're having such a mild winter in S. WI! It's actually been mild in N. WI also...relatively speaking. We still have snow and ice. I heard that S. WI doesn't have it.

I have put rugs on the outside, as well as the inside of all the doors. That helps a little.However, I have 3 dogs that come in and out several times a day. It never ends and this is the dirtiest time of year.

I don't have a mudroom.We enter our home via the front door into a ceramic tiled foyer.There are mats at the entrance where we wipe our feet & remove our shoes.In bad weather, like today, I put down extra mats.Works out fine!!

@Bri21 ... Thanks for the suggestion. We do have one of those pans in the mud room, but we still track in all that winter crud just walking around while taking off our boots. It does finish melting onto the boot tray. I guess winter is just a messy time of year!

I put a piece of cardboard box, at the backdoor. Once the weather gets nicer, I can just throw away the cardboard.

@KathyPet ...I think I'll give it a try. That would reduce the mess in the house quite a bit. The slippers would still track in a little crud from people walking around by the garage door...but it should be a lot better. I'll try putting a rug out there to wipe the slippers on before coming into the house. Thanks for the suggestion...now if I can just get cooperation!

Wish I had a mud room to mop! Everyone except your mother can brush their boots off in the garage, and stomp their feet on a mat outside the mud room. Momma, gets to come into the mud room, sit on (hopefully there is a place for her to sit), wipe down and remove her boots in there. You just can't take a chance on Momma falling - it's so not worth it.
