Will Someone Please Educate Me

I was listening to QVC Plus this morning as I was getting ready for work. It was a Dooney & Bourke show. The host kept referring to the handbags as "she" & "her"!! The more I listened, that's all I heard.

Since when have handbags become a gender? Are all handbags female or is it just Dooney & Bourke??!! I may have to rearrange my closet so they it will become co-ed!!

Ships are always referred to as 'she' too.

In French, the word for handbag is masculine, le sac or le sac à main. As far as I know, English nouns have no gender, so referring to a handbag with the pronoun "she" makes no sense.

I have noticed that some of the clothing vendors refer to their items as "her" and "she" as well.

Just some goofy thing that caught on at QVC I guess.

Hi! Most Dooney Bags are named after Ladies names, so that may be why they refer to them as she or her?

on the handbag forum the posters use 'she' as well.

I heard Shawn say "her" or "she" a couple of years ago and thought it was strange. I guess it's a Shawnism that has spread and I think it's silly.

I believe it started with Amy and then spread like wildfire including their designers. Even the Dooney reps never referred to their bags as she and her previously. Now it's sweaters, blouses, etc. So this - along with shortening everyone's name to a childlike letter or one syllable is one of the reasons I don't watch the Monday evening programming.

Amy does this all the time with handbags and clothing items. It's one reason I find it hard to watch her. It's just plain silly to me.

This is really nothing new. Various haute couture designers have used this term for years about their designs. As @Vivian mentioned, many foreign languages use masculine and feminine pronouns for objects as well as people. Since so many of the higher end designers were once French or Italian, this could be where and why it started. A couple of the Q's designers have affected this and some of the hosts have just picked it up too.

The LOGO lady refers to her clothes by "she". Everything no matter how awful it is , is chic and a she.

It's a host quirk and doesn't bother me. People have referred to many inanimate objects with genders and I don't care one way or the other as long as it's not harmful. (Saying "I call it 'she' because she takes all my money and is nothing by trouble," would be an example of a harmful use of gender.)

But since the brand of my handbags is a male name, I guess they are all "him!"

Lori Goldstien does it and she is on with Amy most of the time. I don't hear Amy say it but Lori...ugh. It's so childish.
