My rant for the day

Grocery stores that have the self scan/check-out lanes

These are meant for smaller orders.

Today on a busy weekend, when there are 12-16 other 'regular' check out aisles open

2 different shoppers are tying up the self check lanes trying to ring up HUGE cart full orders!!!!

The one guy has 2 toddlers running around- so he is trying to deal with them and scan hundreds of items and bag them and of course the area is not designed for this so there is no room for any of this to happen. So his order and the other yahoo doing the same thing have groceries and bags everywhere.

I am standing there with my 1 item; watching this like a sitcom.

If you have hundreds of items to be scanned go to the regular check out lane where there is a conveyor belt, a cashier, and a bagging area.

Common Sense Please.

I get fooled in the full service checkout standing behind the shopper with 2 items.

She wants to chat for 20 minutes with the clerk, tries to use an expired coupon for 1 item and writes a check for her $3.95 purchase.

I think we can find things to complain about if we choose to. YOU could just be patient and go to a regular checkout line yourself. JUST BREATH....

I got irritated the other day in the grocery store.

Another lady and I were heading for the same cashier. She had a cart full of items, and I had maybe 20 things. She got there first - by a hair. If that was me with all of those things, I would have let someone with less items ahead of me. But I digress.

She was being selective as she put her items on the conveyer belt - putting like items together. She wanted the items to be bagged in a certain way. She kept checking on the bagger and her cart was still full. Ringing her up was taking forever.

Finally, the cashier was ringing up the last item and then this woman decides to pull out the checkbook. She was questioning the total. If there wasn't someone behind me, I would have gone to another line, but I was stuck.

Any supermarket that has self-checkouts needs to assign one person (at least) to assist. Customers like the man with toddlers and what sounds like a weekly shopping trip needs to be helped on his way. One employees almost always can service 3 or 4 self-checkouts and assist in bagging at bit, too.

My grocery store 'rant', is the person with a full cart in the 'Express' line (10 items or less) and the cashier says nothing, while I wait behind them with 2-3 items.....grrrrrr.

@Abrowneyegirl: I agree with you completely! It seems to me that the self checkout area is designed to speed things up even more for the folks who are using the express lane - generally those with only a few items. If one is shopping for the month with a full cart, the only sensible checkout is the one with the cashier and the conveyor belt. (When I do that, I make it an event. Find a long line in which to park, select a good magazine, and relax for a few. And then I neatly put the magazine back in its rack. Hey! I just got at least $2 worth of gossip out of a People magazine.)

Your post made me laugh, because no matter how l try to scope out the best line to get in, something always happens to make it the worst choice, LOL.

My rant concerns those who read a magazine in the checkout and then put it back rather than purchasing it. I don't want to buy a used magazine that someone has fouled with with who knows what viruse or bacteria they may be harboring.

Yesterday I was behind a woman with a cart full and two screaming kids. The cashier finishes ringing her up. Then she proceeds to pay so much in cash, another amount on her food stamp card, another amount on her debit card. Then I guess she ran out of money and had to root through her bags to put some stuff back.

Realize that first of all, this was a man . . . with two very young children . . . at a grocery store for heaven's sake. He must have done something awful to his spouse to be punished in this way! Lord help that poor man!!

I wouldn't have stood there watching them. I would have just gone to one of the full-service aisles. I know they can be a pain sometimes too. I always get stuck behind the person who has an item that won't scan, and the checkout clerk has to call for help.

In our grocery store 85% of the check out lanes are self scan, self bag. Among the self scan lanes are four specifically designed for customers with less than ten items.

There are only 5 clerk manned check out lanes, 3 of them have limits of no more than 15 items.

For the self scan lanes occasionally they will have a roving employee who will bag. During the holidays more employees are assigned to bag at the self scan lanes. There is also one employee stationed to resolve any issues that arise with the self scanners.

So to sum up my post, in our local store, it is an accepted practice that shoppers with full carts use the self scan lanes.

One Thanksgiving at K-roger.. it wasn't overly busy but lo and behold, there was a couple with two- TWO- mind you full buggies in the 20 or less aisle. Not a single person said anything to them, if anything this couple was giving the other customers dirty looks, "like say one word". There were other lanes open and we've found K-roger to be very helpful when it's busy but this was different and srange..

Like at Publix, if all their cashiers are busy and every line is backed up then they'll take other customers in the 10 or less aisle. Some lady got so mad at me and the cashier told her she told me to come to her aisle. I mean there has to be some give and take or else take it to customer service..

Or like me you have a full cart and the person at the express lane says I'll take you. I say to her are you sure? She says yes. Then when a couple of people get in line behind me she says nothing to let them know that she told me to get in her line. Now I look like the bad shopper. Some days grocery shopping is such a pain.

I've been in the express lane with a full basket-and felt horribly guilty as I loaded my things on the conveyor belt and seeing others in line behind me.

HOWEVER, I didn't go to the express lane on my own, the cashier came over and pulled me out of the line I was in. At that time there wasn't anyone in the express lane so I was taken over. I really wish they wouldn't do that-

No self-checkout at my grocery store-thank goodness.
