Do you feel like Facebook is trying to force everyone to sign up? I really don't want to join but it is becoming difficult to read public pages without that dumb white bar covering half the page. Also, I have noticed several talk shows occasionally have contest that you must enter thru Facebook. I just don't like to feel "forced" to use Facebook to participate in things.

Nope. I joined very early in the beginning and canceled after only a couple of months. Too much information people offer about themselves I just do not need to or care to read.

How can FB possibly force you to sign up???? Pardon me but That is the dumbest thing I ever read.

I must tell you you are missing out on a lot of good stuff!!! Friendships far and near,family updates ,far and near. current events ,far and near.

IMO FaceBook is the best thing that was ever invented to bring the world closer together. and Mark was Blessed by God to be given the idea to invent it!!!

FB only does what you want it to do.you do not have to show anything or talk to anyone or read anything you do not want to.You can keep entirely private or let the world know you are here.......lol

I absolutely love it and wonder what we ever did without it!!!

Oh puleeessss!

There are a million other sources for current events. Other ways to stay in touch with family and friends.

And I do get what the OP means about being 'forced' (and so did you but you preferred to grandstand).

There are more and more things that you cannot participate in unless you have a FB to register, or to vote, etc. I simply think, oh well, I don't need to participate that bad.

I'm not missing out on a thing. I don't need to be hearing about my friends and family's every move all day long. I don't need to get their political views or their sports leanings or a million pictures of their grandkids clogging my everyday life.

And privacy on FB is a joke. It is only as private as those you share things with allow or keep. You choose who you share with, but they can easily share those things with others without your knowledge.

And FB itself is just too snoopy to suit me. Nope, I'm not missing a thing.

Psssst: you don't have to Friend them...heck, you don't have to Follow them. You have totally control what is on your FB feed.

I adore FB. I have Friended many, but don't Follow that many. I really use it for the Groups which interest me. That's the only thing on my daily Feed.

I belong to several plant-based closed groups & have met so many good people who have tons of ideas & offered support.

ETA: Those having friends 'clog' up their life, WHO are these toxic people you let into your life in the first place?

Sit back. Reflect. Decide. Make changes to better your life.

I have noticed that more public pages/businesses that I try to view require me to log in.

I am usually logged in anyway though even if I am not using it at the time.

I don't talk to people on FB much, I just like to look at subjects that interest me and lurk in some groups.

Facebook can't "force" anyone to join however they are making it more and more difficult to stay off Facebook if there are certain social arenas that you wish to be part of but can't without joining. I only joined five years ago because that is the only way my housing community will communicate, and since we are so spread out it made sense. It lets us know if there are problems in the area.

However, I don't do anything on my page. No pictures, no information, nothing. But I am grateful for Facebook because I found a lady and her two daughters that my family were extremely close to and lost contact over 30 years ago. I'm very grateful for that and it wouldn't have happened without Facebook. But the more I am on it talking with them the more I just can't stand how Facebook is put together and can't stand using it. And I'm not computer illiterate but find it all a mish-mash and unorganized.

No offense to those who love it, and I'm still grateful for finding my friends but I'll probably never get more involved than I am.... which is barely.

My New Year's gift to myself was to deactivate my FB account. I was on FB for years -- enjoyed it a lot in the beginning -- and then found it to be a major time waster that I somehow couldn't stay away from. I expected leaving to be very difficult and found that was not the case at all. I am getting so much more done now that I am not constantly on the computer. It was taking me an hour every morning just to scroll through all the posts from the night before. I will probably go back at some point to catch up on the goings on in the lives of peripheral friends. I know what is going on in the lives of my real friends without FB. For now I am very happy for the break. Don't ever feel like you have to join.

That's interesting you should admit that because I've found my friend that I reconnected with after 30 years is on ALL the time~! She posts dozens of pictures a day, dozens of comments, sends flower gifs and asks me to send it back to her and post it on my Wall... her little black dot is green no matter when I log on and is there no matter when I log off. She loves it, and I respect that.... but it occurred to me that this was pretty much all she is doing and I wondered about that.....

Even though I am a regular FB user, I think I can sympathize.

The structure of it is to create more social (sales?) ties that then multiply.

Somehow they make their money this way.

I have nieces/nephews/high school friends who are re-connecting with me.

My account is structured to prevent stuff/people I don't want to see.

My rant is with Pinterest-- a subject for another day!

Nope. No "forcing" from FB, the forcing is coming from whoever created the page. THEY are driving you to their FB page, and whether you need to have a FB account to view a page is set by whoever created the page, NOT FB.

It all depends on how badly one wants the info, coupons, discounts, whatever on the FB page. Everyone has the choice to join or not join - a choice decided by *whoever createsthe page*, not FB.

I understand what you're saying....it seems like every employer, retailer, organization (whether govt or non-govt) puts info on their Facebook Page and if you choose not to have an account then you could miss out on important information, which in a way "forces" you to obtain an account......

I do have an account which consists of 7 whole friends which are all relatives. I seldom use it, occasionally post or view photos of those that live out of town. But I think it's so overdone and some obviously have a real addiction to it.....I mean come on.....these people that post their every move of their daily lives, what they are eating and doing 24/7, consumed with how many likes a particular post got etc etc......do they think they are celebrities in their own mind or if anyone real cares that they are at a certain restaurant or at the movies....are people supposed to be jealous of their lives or something, how many snappy sayings or cute kitten or puppy photos does one want to view....to me it's just TMI and has really consumed some people!!!

Now I do use Twitter and have it set up to get news feeds but I'm not a twitter crazy person, and usually just read info from publications and websites but seldom carry on a conversation, but if I do with only 140 characters it makes any conversation short and sweet.

If any of my friends start posting things I don't care to see I unfollow them. I only have 30 friends as that is about all of my true friends. I don't need to be a friend of a friend.

I have unfollowed 3. The religion, jokes and politics are not something I care to see. So they are gone and don't know it.

i am interested in all that happens in my town so I have friended that page.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes. This is how I roll. If you are different, that is your business and I won't make any judgements. To each their own.
