Has Anyone Figured Out Where Socks Go?

I finally cleaned out and sorted my sock and underwear drawers. I have four socks without a mate. And those four could not possibly be married to each other. Do you think washing machines really do eat them?

Almost every time I wash/dry my socks - with other items - 1 sock is missing. I just leave the 1 sock on my dresser - and, eventually, the other sock appears. Sometimes I find a sock hidden in my pajamas/underwear in my dresser. They do show up!!!!

I safety pin them together at the toe or the heel so that when they go…they go together as a couple and live happily ever after in the mysterious sock universe. I am less likely to miss them when they disappear together (unless they were my favorite pair). It is the same for washable gloves/mittens.

A now almost grown granddaughter has always said that the missing socks go to heaven so the angels can wear them to keep their feet warm. She has an answer for everything.

I got tired of having so many unmatched socks that I filled a box. SOO - it is now the law of the house. If you want socks washed - you are to use a zippered mesh bag. Each bag has the person's name on it.

Don't you know the FIRST time I used my "fool proof system" - the zipper came unzipped about 3 inches - and one sock escaped.

I found a pile of socks under my bed, near the headboard. Some brand new. I had been wearing them to bed, but taking them off later in the night, and sticking them under my pillow. Moving the pillow around pushed them off the top of the bed where they fell back down behind it.

If you really want to know I can tell you what I found out. My late husband was always 'fixing' everything. He put new heating elements in the dryer (we could have bought a new one but he just wanted to do it.....and he did).

On that same note, when my daughter was little the water stopped pumping out of the machine. He took the entire thing apart. Sometimes a sock or something will float up over the basket and get into the drum part of the washer. This will sometimes cause the pump filter to be blocked and it makes it so the thing won't pump out the water.

On another note, the sock thief comes along and only steals one sock. It varies on which one he wants so sometimes you find a righty missing ..... other times a lefty missing. That's a more accurate account of what happens.

I KNOW THE ANSWER !!! (she said, waving her arm furiously)

Turns out, it happens during the rinse cycle ..... the washer starts spinning and those wet socks stretch out like long skinny cloth snakes .... and as the spin cycle continues, BOTH the wash water and those long cloth snakes go out the pipe and into the sewer system!

SOLUTION: Buy a few of those mesh lingerie bags and put several matching sets into each bag. You will NEVER lose any socks again! Well, at least I haven't lost any socks since I started doing this.

(I love solving mysteries.)
