Are t.v. ads having a negative effect on us?

I know they are affecting me in a negative way. I tend to be a worrier, by nature, and the constant barrage of pharmaceutical commercials makes it worse.

Whatever happened to "Choosy mothers choose Jif" and "Good to the Last Drop"? I wish they'd focus more on other things besides health.

@house_cat, that would be a yes and a no for us. Hate hate hate the violent movies and games being advertised. How many times to do they have to show us the same car commercials over and over. And all the pharmaceutical commercials are ridiculous, they make it sound like you can just waltz into your Doctor's office and get that certain drug.

We turn the station and there it is again. Our biggest complaint are the violent movies and games for kids'.

I have a DVR and fast forward through the commercials. Sometimes I forget because I'm doing something else while I watch TV and if I don't even notice they're on, I'm guessing they don't really bother me.

The ads that DO bother me are ads like the Carl's Jr/Hardees ads that are super sexist, not the pharmaceutical ads.

If you're a "worrier by nature", then DON'T watch them. Either mute, or, better yet, fast forward through them.

I always record my favorite shows and watch them later ... fast forwarding through all commercials. IMO, It's more efficient to watch a one hour show in 43 minutes. Try it.

I honestly never even pay attention to them.

If I'm watching something that I've DVR'd, I fast forward through them.

Honestly, I think all pharmaceutical ads and those lawyer ads should be banned from all advertising.

@house_cat Don't let anyone, including marketing executives who do not even have a medical degree, tell you you are not okay and need to take a drug. How would they know?

The big pharmaceuticals companies have lots of $$$$ to spend on prime-time advertising, and the demographic that watches television has gotten older, so they're a perfect target audience for these commercials. I agree-- the prescription drug commercials have gotten out of control. I find them totally unwatchable.

I mostly ignore TV ads, so I would say they don't bother me in general. The news (local and national) is what has a negative effect to me, so I choose not to watch it.

I don't watch that much television and if I do, it is recorded so I can skip the commercials.

I guess I'm thinking of it this morning because I'm home today, and DH just loves the horrible morning news. Between the dreadful news and the commercials, I'm beginning to feel anxious.

I think it's time to go upstairs and make the bed.

OH!! I forgot to add .... the pharmaceutical ads will be getting WORSE, so be advised.

Last year I read that some regulation was passed for either the FCC or product advertising that said the drug companies are going to be required to provide even MORE details ... and possible side effects.

It's pretty obvious that any drug company wanting to get the word out there about a new drug coming to market will find TV to be a far reaching method to do so.

If I never see another viagra commercial, it will be too soon. I think tat every one should be followed by an ad for birth control.

there are two commercials that upset me alot.

the sick children that have cancer makes me sad, but i watch them. they are so brave.

the second one is about the abused animals. i have to look away, but that music they play is so sad. this one really, really bothers me.

Mostly, I think I would rather have the diease than the Rx The side effects are horrible!

I avoid the news all weekend long, try to only watch weather. Even that is depressing LOL Chicagoland winter blech!

I can't stand commercials. When one comes on,that will be my QVC watching time or doing things around the house. I'm very good at knowing when a commercial will be over so I can get back to my regular show.

No DVD here as I never know what I will be watching when I watch.

I am appalled that it is permitted in the US to advertise prescription drugs. This is not allowed in other countries. What on earth is the purpose of promoting a chemotherapy drug for a rare cancer? How can patients request drugs simply on the basis of an ad, as if they were promoting French fries? It gets on my last nerve!

I completely agree that prescription medicine commercials should never have been allowed!! Especially when they rattle off all the side affects!!! Those come along with every prescription you fill!!
